NYC Firefighters and Medics to Take 'Trans 101' Class
New York City firefighters and paramedics must now take a "Trans 101" course to learn how to properly interact with transgender individuals.
According to The New York Post, the two-hour sensitivity training class will teach FDNY employees correct terminology and how to ask for a person's preferred pronoun.
The course was created after Mayor de Blasio signed an executive order allowing people to use the public bathroom or locker room that conforms with their gender identity.
"It's never been an issue, but people have made it an issue," said one fireman. "This is one of those trainings where they're just preparing for a potential problem."
The Post reported that city employees at public pools and parks are also getting transgender training, as gender sensitivity issues are more likely to arise in locker rooms and bathrooms.
