Child dragged into water by alligator near Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
Sheriff: Search will continue until resolved

The child, who is about 2 years old, officials say, was dragged into the Seven Seas Lagoon near Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa around 9:30 p.m., sheriff's office spokeswoman Rose Silva said.

Deputies have taped off the scene and are searching the waters.

The child has not yet been found.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings held a press conference early Wednesday morning.

Demings said 50 people, including two marine units, will continue to search the lake throughout the night until resolution. A dive team is on standby.

Florida Fish and Wildlife units are also assisting and have an alligator trapper on the water with deputies.

"We're going to hope for the best in these circumstances, but based on my 35 years of law enforcement experience, we know that we have some challenges ahead of us at this time," the sheriff said.

According to Demings, the family was vacationing from Nebraska. The child and his father were wading in about one foot of water when the alligator attacked.

"The father entered the water and tried to grab the child and was not successful in doing so. The mother also may have been in the water. So the parents diligently tried to get the child," Demings said.

Witnesses as well as Florida Fish and Wildlife officials reported that the alligator could have been up to 7 feet long.

A Walt Disney World spokesperson attended the news conference Wednesday morning.

"Everyone here at Walt Disney World Resort is devastated by this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with the family and we are helping the family and doing everything we can to assist them," the spokesperson said.

    So sad and tragic.

*Wonders if there will be a public outcry against this Father like there was against the Mom of the toddler at the Cincinnati Zoo*

This link has a video and pics of the resort and lagoon, you have to wonder why the warning signs only say 'No Swimming'.

They were only wading in one foot of water, why was there no mention of a danger of alligators especially in a tourist area with people who aren't familiar with the area?

They were just in ankle deep water along the edge. The sign said no swimming, not beware of alligators. When you don't live in that environment, you have no idea the danger involved ... I sure didn't when I went to Florida. I was shocked to find out I had to avoid every pool of fresh water. I read where they are from but right now I just remember it's from one of the more northern states. No alligators.

We have been there where this happened. We use to go over to DL and wander around quite often when we lived down South. Also when we lived in Louisiana, we loved to walk around the Governors Lake over by the Capitol, only to find later they pulled out a huge Alligator. He was probably watching us all along licking his lips, if he had any. We knew little about them.

Disney Gator Attack Brings Back Horrifying Memories for New Hampshire Man

-The tragic death of a toddler who was attacked by an alligator at Walt Disney World brought back horrifying memories for a New Hampshire man this week.

Thirty years ago, Paul Santamaria was also attacked by a gator on Disney property.

“It was pretty terrifying at the time,” he told ABC New Hampshire affiliate WMUR.

Santamaria was 8 when he and his family took a trip from Bristol, New Hampshire, to Walt Disney World in 1986. The family stayed at the Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort.

He recalled being with his siblings at a playground in the resort when he wandered away to feed ducks at a pond. That’s when a gator lurking in the murky water suddenly emerged.

“It came out of the water, knocked me down, grabbed my leg and started to throw me around and try to pull me into the water,” he told WMUR.

As the gator tried to drag Santamaria into the water, he yelled for his older sister and brother.

“My sister grabbed me under the arms and started to have a tug-of-war with this alligator that was, you know, thrashing me around and trying to pull me into the pond...”

Disney World removes gators and crocs from shows and rides

In the wake of a tragic alligator attack at a Disney World hotel that left a 2-year-old boy dead, Disney World has begun to make changes — even to decade-old attractions.

Within days after 2-year-old Lane Graves was snatched by an alligator near the Seven Seas Lagoon Lagoon at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa on June 14, Disney World staff was installing temporary barriers and new signs warning about the alligators.

And now, references and appearances to the predators in the parks have begun to disappear.

“We continue to evaluate processes and procedures for our entire property, and, as part of this, we are reinforcing training with our cast for reporting sightings and interactions with wildlife and are expanding our communication to guests on this topic,” Walt Disney World Resort vice president Jacquee Wahler said in a statement last week.

Louis, the trumpet-playing alligator from the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog, was supposed to be a part of the Friendship Faire castle show at Magic Kingdom, but got pulled just days before the show premiered on June 23, according to a Disney employee, who asked to remain anonymous because of job security. The alligator was supposed to play trumpet during the show.

The Tic Toc Croc from Peter Pan, known for hunting villain Captain Hook, was also removed from the Festival of Fantasy parade at Magic Kingdom, park guests reported.

The Jungle Cruise has also changed its scripts, stopping employees from making jokes like “but remember, folks, if you don’t watch your children, the crocodiles will,” as they narrate an adventure ride through rivers across the world, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The script, known for its puns, has been in place since 1962...
