I don't think it's that he is a 'sex symbol', I don't think anybody thinks that except Austin himself. I think it is rather a reference to the character's sexual 'looseness', and that's why it's inappropriate.

I used Mr. Bond as a nick on a christian forum for 8 years, that character is no better. Colonel Douglas Mortimer is a bounty killer. What these have in common is that they are entirely fictional characters and employing them can be a matter of personal interpretation. The naked cowboy is a real person. He is also nearly physically naked, at least with the guitar in place.
