Everyday Sunday's Trey Pearson Comes Out as Gay

Trey Pearson, the founding member of Christian rock group Everyday Sunday, kept his sexuality secret for decades. Then, on Tuesday, he came out as gay in an open letter to his fans, published in (614) Columbus, explaining the daily difficulty he faced in pretending to be something he wasn't for fear of how his church, his God, his family and his friends would respond.

"I grew up in a very conservative Christian home where I was taught that my sexual orientation was a matter of choice, and had put all my faith into that," Pearson wrote.

"I had never before admitted to myself that I was gay, let alone to anyone else. I never wanted to be gay. I was scared of what God would think and what all of these people I loved would think about me; so it never was an option for me. I have been suppressing these attractions and feelings since adolescence. I've tried my whole life to be straight."

At 35, Pearson has a wife and two children; he's enjoyed a highly successful career, having sold hundreds of thousands of albums, one of which cracked the Billboard top 200. According to (614) Columbus, he's performed in every state in the country and in 20 countries. But while Pearson maintains strong faith, he's aware that his letter could end the success he's known.

This situation is one of my personal concerns for the struggle of same sex attraction among christians

There was a time when I thought like the majority of believers that ALL homosexuality was a choice. The homosexual act is a choice but I now believe there are people born with
same sex attraction with varying degrees of strength.

It must be incredibly difficult for those born with SSA and wanting to live as a believer. Even after prayer the attraction does not go away but they still have to choose to live the christian life.

The internal struggle is strong and these people need lots of mercy and grace.

This is why I believe all humans are born in sin through the fall of Adam...everyone has sinful latent tendencies which start to manifest later in life.
How is it that a person born in a christian home and in a godly environment struggles with these internal issues????

Can it be overcome....yes but the Church needs to recognize some are going to struggle all their lives with SSA but still sincerely love Jesus and want to live for him

Good post, Cardinal. Right now the ministry that replaced Exodus (Hope for Wholeness) is having their annual gathering in North Carolina. All are Christians (both men and women) who continue to struggle with SSA. Many were raised in strong Christian homes. They don't believe they were born that way--although certainly being born with a sinful nature contributes to the problem. Nor was it a matter of choice. In fact, they will tell you how much they wish they could simply "choose" their orientation. You might pray for them this week. You might also consider supporting any local ministries that help these people. Sexual sobriety for them is very hard.

If they don't believe they were born that way and it wasn't a matter of choice, why do they believe they are attracted to the same sex?

Many differ on whether it's nature (born that way) or nurture (the way you were raised). In many cases (not all), there is a pattern to kids who develop homosexually. It's often described as the child rejecting (or feeling rejected by) the same sex parent and bonding more naturally with the opposite sex parent. Many gay men report having had strong mothers and disinterested or absent fathers. Many gay women reject their femininity because they have observed it as weakness. This is especially true when the mother was abused by the husband. Also, a high percentage of lesbian women report they were molested as girls. As a result, they reject their femininity in order to avoid being abused by men again. As I said, this is certainly not in all cases. Many gay men had great fathers and many lesbian women loved their mothers. It's just a pattern that is more common among SSA people than in the general public.

and, unfortunately, once a sexual imprint is made, it's near impossible to change it.

but for the mercy of God supernatually working.

Ditto. When I saw the last name, I thought maybe he's related to that other Pearson.

A simple question for you. If the person in question is sanctified through and through, are they still "born this way" ? What is the result ?
