    John - Let's Talk Linux

I am on the edge dude. Plan to get a laptop perhaps in the next week or so and install linux on it. Before I make the dive I want to test the waters because there are a lot of programs I need to keep working such s video editing software, 3d box shot software, and all that jazz.

Do you know if the linux community is still working on vmware type programs that allows one to install Windows software on Linux?

Yes, vmware player is free. I have XP, vista and windows 7 VMS all running fine with Ubuntu 14.04 LT as host, this is in a quad core desktop with 8gb memory so your performance may vary with a laptop. I typically assign about 2GB memory to a VM, they run plenty fast.

You might want to check the installer for ubuntu, the last I checked it would recognize a windows installation and give you the option to install it side by side giving you a dual boot machine but I'd rather the VM setup, you can run them all at once. I believe they just upgraded the vmware product to support windows 10 and I'm not sure if that upgrade made it into the free version.

one more. Virtual box, open source.

VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2. See "About VirtualBox" for an introduction.

Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Solaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6 and 3.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, and OpenBSD.

I have a Bootcamp installation also with Windows on it, but just too much trouble to restart, boot back up into Windows, etc. This is much easier.

I agree. No need for dual boot with VMs as long as you have enough memory and processing power.

I loaded Ubuntu 14.04 onto a old laptop and got it working but I am going crazy trying to get my Broadcom 4311 wireless card to work as I am having trouble loading drivers.
