Lightbulb Wendy's to Roll Out Self-Serve Kiosks by End of 2016

Well, hate to say I toldja so, but, well....toldja so.

Wendy’s fast food restaurant chain says it will begin offering self-serve kiosks at its 6,000-plus locations across America, making them available to costumers by the end of 2016.

The fast food giant’s decision to move toward automation comes just as “Fight for $15”–a progressive protest movement, pushing minimum wage hikes–is applying pressure on state governments to raise wages for low-skilled fast food workers.

Last August, Wendy’s CFO Todd Penegor told investors that mandated wage hikes will cause his company to pursue other innovative avenues that could lead to fewer jobs for low-skill workers.

“We continue to look at initiatives and how we work to offset any impacts of future wage inflation through technology initiatives, whether that’s customer self-order kiosks, whether that’s automating more in the back of the house in the restaurant,” Penegor said, adding that “you’ll see a lot more coming on that front later this year from us.”

On the same conference call, Wendy’s CEO Emil Brolick said that individual Wendy’s franchises “will likely look at the opportunity to reduce overall staff, look at the opportunity to certainly reduce hours and any other cost reduction opportunities, not just price.”

Indeed, Wendy’s officials told Investor’s Business Daily that it would be up to individual franchisees to decide whether they will offer the self-serve kiosks.

Penegor says several franchises are being squeezed by wage inflation. California’s 250-plus franchise-owned Wendy’s are struggling with the state’s $10 minimum wage, which will soon spike to $15. Franchise-operated Wendy’s restaurants in New York–where minimum wage is $15–can’t compensate for that state’s crushing wage increase.

“You know there are some people out there who naively say that these wages can simply be passed along in terms of price increases,” Brolick said last August. “I don’t think that the average franchisee believes that.”

Idiots. Not Wendy's, the people that think burger flippers should make $10-$15 an hour.

Exactly. Say Hi. Punch a few buttons, grab a cup and fill it up. Place on tray. Put some fries in a paper container. Grab a burger (or whatever), and put it on a tray, and say, "have a nice day".

Some paramedics only make $15.00 an hour starting.

The world has literally gone insane. Thank you progressives, thank you. You just knew it was only a matter of time before any employer would pull the rug out from under this insanity and move towards automation. You just knew it.

Jobs like Wendy's and McDonalds used to be called ENTRY LEVEL JOBS, not careers and were filled by 14-16yo kids who wanted to make a few bucks .... or by older people who needed to supplement the household income. They knew what they were getting into when they applied.

The robots are coming! They are creating robots here in the bay area (silicon valley ) that will be taking most service jobs.

Robots will be driving taxi cabs, waiting on you at McDs, and even serve as nurses in hospital. In fact, it's already happening in SF.

The robots can work 24hrs and never get tired.

we have the first Apple /Google hospital and my niece went on a tour when they opened. She saw little robots coming down the hall lol ( they were the nurses). They are performing surgeries remotely and thru robots too

If the automation gets out of hand you can rest assured the govt. will pass laws that only so much percentage, etc, can be automated.

Naaaa....it's all been planned out. Been trying to tell you people that transhumanism is precisely where the world is headed. Chimeras, human cloning, robots merging with humans ("singularity") etc....are already here. It's NOT the future.

You guys really need to brush up on this stuff. You guys just handwaive away this stuff and you'll be in shock in the very near future.

You can avoid major, expensive repair costs with an extended service plan for your Hummer. Many vehicle repairs can cost thousands of dollars in unexpected expense, now may be the time to consider an extended service plan for your vehicle.
