    Post What Is Eternal Life?

    -
Of one thing I'm pretty sure: Though eternal life is immortal; eternal life isn't immortality. For instance when Christ says: "I assure you, those who heed my message, and trust in God who sent me, have eternal life" he isn't saying that they have immortality. The proof of that is all around us. Every day, around the clock, Christ's believing followers die all the time, just like everybody else. In point of fact, Christ had eternal life (John 5:26, 1John 1:2) yet was easily killed by crucifixion.

Note the grammatical tense of the "have" verb in Christ's statements: it's present tense rather than future, indicating that his believing followers have eternal life right now-- no delay and no waiting period.

†. John 6:54 . .Whoever who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life

†. John 3:36 . . He who believes in the Son has eternal life

†. John 6:47 . .Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.

†. John 5:24 . . I assure you, those who heed my message, and trust in God who sent me, have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from Death into Life.

According to God's testimony-- as an unimpeachable expert witness --Christians lacking eternal life are also lacking His son; viz: they are quite literally christless Christians.

†. 1John 5:11-12 . . And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the life, does not have God's son.

Christians lacking God's son are excluded from his sheep.

†. Rom 8:9 . . If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

In the here and now :

John 17:1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.
2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.
3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent"

The point is that this eternal life transcends physical death.

When it comes to comparisons; eternal life is far and away superior to human life; which is a creature kind of life that had its beginning in the first chapter of Genesis. In contrast, eternal life is not a creature kind of life, nor did it have a beginning because eternal life always is.

†. Ex 3:13-14 . . Moses protested: If I go to the people of Israel and tell them the god of your ancestors has sent me to you; they won't believe me. They will ask: Which god are you talking about? What is his name?' Then what should I tell them? God replied: I am the one who always is. Just tell them: "I am has sent me to you."

In other words: eternal life is one of the qualities of divinity.

†. 1John 1:1-2 . .That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched-this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.

    WebersHome:

Jesus Christ was not talking about the here and now as far as everlasting life is concerned. Although the present tense was used in his sentences, it is obvious he was giving a GUARANTEE NOW of future blessings. Notice below from your own quotations of the scriptures. I will bold the particular verb in light blue.

People use that type of language all the time in everyday language to indicate their promise is here and now but the thing promised is for the future. Take, for example, the following statement that someone would make to one of his or her heirs. "I guarantee right now that my entire estate is yours."

Guess what? The estate does not become the heir's immediately or "right now." The heir does not inherit until after the one making the promise dies--perhaps decades after the promise was given. The PROMISE or guarantee itself is here and now. The estate is guaranteed today to be given when in the future, so since the guarantee or promise is given today, the sentence has to be written in the present tense. The future heir should have sense enough to realize that the thing promised or guaranteed will occur in the future and not then and there.

That is exactly what Jesus Christ was doing in the verses you presented above. He was making a promise for future blessings of everlasting life, but he was guaranteeing or promising it on that particular day of the conversation with his disciples. Thus, all of his sentences are written in the present tense because he made the promise during that "present day."

Maybe you don't think the language and grammar of John 6:54, John 3:36, John 6:47, and John 5:24 indicate the here and now; but I do.

And maybe you don't think the language and grammar of 1John 5:11-12 indicates the here and now either; but I do.

FYI: According to the language and grammar of John 5:24; people who lack eternal life in the here and now, are quite dead in the here and now. They are also failing, in the here and now, to heed Christ's message; and failing, in the here and now, to believe in God who sent him.

Maybe you don't think that's true; but I do.

    WebersHome:

What you choose to believe and what LOGIC dictates are two entirely different things. The fact that all of the people Jesus was talking directly to ended up dying, that, in and of itself, is evidence that only Jesus' promise was in the here and now and everlasting life was for the future.

I gave you the example of a person making a "here and now" promise to an heir: "I promise you TODAY that you will inherit all my possessions." Logic tells a reasonable person that only the PROMISE is here and how but the possessions to be inherited will only occur after the person making the promise dies--years later in many instances.

If you want to continue insisting that the Bible is wrong because the disciples should have lived forever from the day Jesus gave them the guarantee--2,000 years ago--suit yourself. The fact is that Scripture does not contradict itself. If the Jesus had been telling his disciples that they would not die from that point on, that is exactly what would have occurred. They never would have died.

The Bible is inspired of God. It is never in error. Whenever it comes to a contest of whether the Bible is wrong or whether the human's understanding of scripture is wrong, it always turns out that the human is wrong. Why so? Let the Bible answer that.

"Never can that happen! But let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, even as it is written: 'That you might be proved righteous in your words and might win when you are being judged.' " (Romans 3:4)

Again, the Bible does not contradict itself. Jesus was promising his disciples that they would live forever IN THE FUTURE.

Faith believes what's revealed to it; rather than only what makes sense to it.

†. 1Cor 1:26-27 . . For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh

†. 1Cor 2:14 . . A natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they are absurd to him, and he cannot make sense of them, because they are spiritually discerned.

According to Eph 4:11-14, one of the reasons why Christ endowed his church with God-given teachers is to steer his sheep away from clever sophists skilled at making lies sound like the truth. Plus; he endowed his sheep with a special anointing for the very same purpose. (1John 2;26-27)

Actually, you can get filled with the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ, which is Zoe Life, and resurrection life will enable you to walk in divine health... as in, not getting sick. This is a major scripture for understanding HOW God heals and how He can keep us well.

But, it's not automatic... we have to choose to continually allow the Holy Spirit to live in us.

    Romans 8:11
But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead LIVES in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken (make alive) your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwells in you.
