    A.J. tell us about ....

Alberta. Are you living far from Canmore? We've been watching Ski Tour Canada at the Nordic Ski Centre in Canmore for a week now, and the scenery is awesome. Makes me want to go there. :) And speaking of skiing, your biathlon team won the bronze medallion in the World Championship which is taking place over here (in Oslo) this week. Biathlon is probably as big (well, not quite) over here as ice hockey is on your side of the Pond

Hi peace! Thank you so much for asking about my beautiful Alberta! I love this province!

I live all the way across the province (almost 600km) to the east and some distance north of Canmore, although I've been there numerous times. It's absolutely beautiful. It's in the Rockies and there is breathtaking scenery. I actually live very close to the Saskatchewan border... about 25km, and I'm in SK. The city where my church is straddles the border of AB & SK and my church is in SK.

Where I live is rolling prairie, which means lots of hills and trees, not bald and flat. And it's absolutely beautiful here, too. It can get a bit dull in the spring but all the other seasons can be quite spectacular, especially in June-July when the canola fields are blooming.

I can post a few pics if you like, but there's quite a few on my FB page.

Oh, and that's great about our Canadian Biathlon team! I'm sure there are many who follow the ski teams, but Rog and I aren't really into any sports, not even hockey. To be honest, I don't even watch the Olympics any more. I don't know if you remember, but some years ago, the downhill ski events at the Calgary Winter Olympics took place in the Kananaskis-Canmore area. We were given free tickets to some of the events by the company Rog worked for which was based in Calgary, but it was so far away and would cost too much to go for us, so we just didn't go.

Rodeo is our sport and we attend a couple of rodeos a year.

Rodeo is bucking horses, both with saddles and without (bareback), calf roping, both individual and team (2ppl), steer wrestling, bull riding and bull riding, all men's events. For women they have barrel racing. There's steer riding for boys and sometimes a couple of kids events where the littlest ones ride sheep and the little bit older ones have teams of 3 and try to get on and ride miniature horses.

When it's called a Stampede Rodeo, it includes chuckwagon races.

That's the US and Canada and maybe Australia... we get quite a few Australian cowboys come up to compete during our summers.

Now Mexican rodeo is a whole different beast, from what I've seen on the internet.

This is a picture of one of our favorite rodeos to go to. Rarely miss it, except if it's pouring rain.

This picture is how we survive if it's rainy.

And this is looking out into the rodeo arena. What you see here is saddle bronc.

Thank you, A.J. Interesting! Wish I could go to a rodeo some time, but I guess I'll have to be satisfied with an old Western movie now and then.

Saskatchewan --- I always found that name so fascinating --- like som of the names down under. Imagine TT joining the Australian rodeo guys in his Elvis suit!

Your going to church in another province reminds me of our going to church in another city. I live in a small city called Fredrikstad and the next one is Sarpsborg. There's a lot of rivalry going on, especially when the soccer teams are involved. Big deal!! So when it comes to church life I'll often say I come from Sarpsborg because our church is there, and people wonder ... "hey, from the enemy city?? I thought you were from Fredrikstad." But who cares, we belong to a different Kingdom!

Alberta is so large, it's hard to describe all the different areas! We border the US in the south, along Idaho and Montana, so our southern areas are dry and need irrigation. We have coal mines. We have large forested areas. There's an area farther north and west from us that's called Grand Prairie... an enormous, very flat area with few trees that is used for grain farming, where around Calgary, it's foothills, used for ranching. We have a huge oil industry (which is in an extreme downturn right now and over 100,000 ppl have lost their jobs!) We have lots of mixed farming around here, which means the farmers have various grains and cattle as well as other animals. We have huge lakes and rivers. We also have a large Bad Lands area that is well known for its dinosaur fossils.

In the north, we border the North West Territories and I've never been that far north. So that takes us almost to the land of the midnight sun and true tundra... It takes a special kind if people to live up there their whole lives.

And of course, we have severely cold weather most winters. Which is what everyone thinks of when they think of Canada.

We are 661,848 km2 (255,541 sq mi) and only have a population of about 4,200,000 ppl and I'm pretty sure over half of that lives in the 2 major cities, Edmonton (our capital) and Calgary (which has a world famous Stampede).

But I don't want to bore you with too many details. I'll just give you the wikipedia page and let you browse it if you want to. The border city I live near is Lloydminster. It's almost half way up the Alberta-Saskatchewan border.

Lol .... You can always go to Youtube and check out some rodeo videos. My mom didn't like going to rodeos because she'd get too involved and would react to the crazy buck offs and stuff... especially the bull riding. It can get extremely dangerous. Come visit me in June, and I'll take you to the rodeo on the hill!

Saskatchewan... beautiful province as well... it's the province with the largest flat areas.... where they say you can watch your dog run away for days. But it's also very diverse.

Here's a hilarious video of Ellen Degeneres trying to say Saskatchewan.

And I very much understand the city rivalries... they have strong ones here in Alberta with National Hockey League teams. Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames... in fact, we're looking for a new pastor, and the men always have to find out what hockey and football teams the pastor we're interviewing favours. It's always funny! Thankfully, we're all one in His kingdom!!!

Thanks for sharing. Canada is so beautiful! My sis lives in Anchorage and I've been there three times, but never to Canada.

Oklahoma is a rodeo state. We don't attend as Mr C isn't a fan, but our kids go often. In western OK especially, all small towns have a yearly rodeo. Okc is the home of the International Finals Rodeo. I went to Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyo. once when I was kid. It seemed really big time to me.

    Sorry for the hijack.
