Thread: Have you ever gotten a traffic ticket?

I'm very careful driving through the city because children dart in and out of the street all the time. The speed limit is 30 mph and I slow down at every crosswalk whether I see someone preparing to cross or not. Sometimes I wonder if I cause more accidents because people get impatient and tear around me, but not only would I be devastated if I hurt a child, I'd be likely killed for it considering the neighborhoods I drive through.

I probably got ticketed for speeding 4 times in the 43 years since I've been driving...

However, those incidents were years ago - I now drive like the "typical little old lady." If anything, I drive under the speed limit now.

Yep, I'm that pokey old woman that you have to go around, if you're in a hurry.

This was all so foreign to me, I've never had a ticket, not even a parking ticket. A few weeks ago I was pulled over for supposedly failing to stop at a stop sign. I was in a little bit of a hurry that day but I did stop, it might've only been for a count of 'one thousand and one' but it was a full stop.

I told the officer I stopped but he said no, you only tapped your brakes, you have to have the momentum of the vehicle fully stop. He was about a half a block behind me so apparently from his perspective he called it a roll. But I don't roll stop signs, I'm a creature of habit in some ways and am accustomed to feeling that little jerk that comes when the vehicle actually stops.

Since I didn't do it I decided to contest it and today was the court date for the informal hearing. At 9am sharp an officer does a roll call and tells us our options, you can stand before the magistrate and present your case and if he deems it plausible you can come back for a formal hearing with the officer present and present your case again. But, if you choose right now to plead guilty to "double parking" and pay the $140 fine assigned to it, your original ticket as well as the points assigned to it would be dismissed...and if you do decide to do the formal hearing and lose you can't go back and take the 'double parking' deal, you'll get the original fine and the points.

The fine for disobeying a stop sign is $110.00 and 3 points and I had been talking to some folk who said that if its basically your word against the ticketing officer, they'll usually win...decisions, decisions. It wasn't fair but I decided to do the 'double parking' to save future time and trouble and just get it over with.

My SIL works for the Highway Patrol in MS. She said it's essentially a THREE SECOND rule.

I didn't know they ticketed for "California rolls" any more. Everyone seems to run red lights, blow through stop signs, etc. so much so that driving has become very dangerous around here.

I had a ticket once for failure to stop - not at a stop sign or stop light. But I tried to swerve around someone who had stopped and hit another car. It was eons ago, too, within a year of having my license.

I have never heard it called a 'California roll' before, that's a new one to me. But rolling a stop sign is very ticket-able. I was a teeny bopper with a new license and in a hurry to get home one day when I slightly rolled the stop sign right by my house.

I immediately heard a siren and pulled over, I was scared and the tears started but a very nice policeman talked things over with me and only gave me a warning. He told me not to do that anymore...and I've tried very hard ever since to do complete stops.

...and just where can that be found in any rule book?? To me a stop is a stop, that was going to be my defense:
