    Degrees of Sin?

I hear a lot of people from my area say "sin is sin, there's no little sin or big sin"

    Do you agree with that?

I disagree, but I would like to hear anyone's take on it

In one sense, all sins are equivalent in that all sins represent thoughts or behaviors that fall short of what God has commanded of us.

But to me, it seems obvious that some sins are worse than others, at least in terms of their effects on others: Looking lustfully at a picture for a couple of seconds is not the same as exterminating a population.

Continuous sin hardens the heart progressively making one less and less sensitive to correction of the Holy Spirit therefore most likely increasing in offense to others.

The Bible tells us that when we sin and not only take pleasure in our own sin but take pleasure in causing others to sin we

    Romans 1 speaks of this..

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,7 in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

These are people who KNOW the truth and choose to oppose God in action and being a stumbling block to others on purpose. Jesus told the Pharisees...Woe unto you..

But as far as I understand it only ONE actually keeps someone out of Heaven and the things listed above would be behind that...blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

It's one thing to not Know God but another to know Him and oppose Him willfully..IMHO

    Matthew 11
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:

21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.

23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

Their sin appeared to be worse than what was committed in Sodom, thus a worse punishment for them.

Because they had had the King of glory walk among them and demonstrate His great love and grace...and they STILL rejected Him..

I think the point is that ANY sin is enough to bring death.

However, by consequences, and impact in our lives, some sin is more hurtful than others.

I don't think it's an either/or but a yes.. it's all the same and it's also not the same.

    Thus, a 'worse' sin.

I think that when many people talk of "sin is sin", it is in a context of "all have sinned" and Jesus died for "all our sins", so in that sense, all sin is covered by Jesus blood. This is looking at sin as a collective blob of yuck.

YET there are numerous verses (as many have pointed out) that some sins ARE WORSE THAN OTHERS. Here are some more:

1 Tim 1:16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.

John 19:11 "Jesus answered, ‘You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin'"

Prov 6:16-19 There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

So are there different degrees of punishment in hell? What could they be?
