I think about $1.5 per liter here but that is mostly due to high costs of food production in mountainous Norway. Imported orange juice (with the fruit sugar intact) is cheaper and can cost less than $1 per liter. The benefit is that our food is mostly far safer than food generally is in the US, for instance we use about 1/50 of the antibiotics used in the US (per unit) and no hormones to boost production. And so on.

Now this is American gallon which would equate to 3.785 liters.

$1.99 gallon equates to 0.52 cents liter....which is cheap cheap cheap

We pay a minimum of $1 litre for cheapest milk but most is higher
Glad you did the work for me there... I've been so confused in the past trying to convert from an American gallon to an English gallon to work out how much a litre of petrol is... arrgh! :)

In terms of what I usually buy, I pay £1 for 2 pints of "double filtered" milk, since I don't use much at home generally. (The double filtered stuff tends to last for about two weeks, but is still semi-skimmed. Not that longlife crud. Eugh! ;) )

Wait, I can't remember if it's two pints or one litre, actually. (checks) Ok it's one litre, not two pints. That would be silly. *cough* ;)

So, conveniently enough, that means it would be exactly £3.79/gallon, which makes it $5.88USD. ...

Hey, no wonder I was confused about 1litre or 2pints... I've just realised that they sell the milk I buy by the 1L bottle, but the "normal" version is sold by 2pint bottles. :)

Of course, a far more reasonable comparison would be for a 6 pint bottle of normal milk (3.48L, so just a shade under a gallon), which is £1.48 or $2.30. (Yeah, that means I'm paying a lot for my milk if you look at it like that, but like I said... I don't use that much :) )

Who is getting a gallon of milk for under $2? I'm paying close to $4 right now.

That's really high, are you buying it at convenience stores? In Metro Detroit its been at the $1.99 mark in major supermarkets for a few months now, Aldi's usually has it even cheaper.

Here it is again in the new Kroger flyer:

No, I buy milk at the grocery store, it was well over $3, but considering that numbers jumble up in my head sometimes, I'll double check next time I'm shopping and report back.

... And so it transpired that Krys is milking her own cows and Sue only buys 2 gallon bottles...

I buy lactose-free milk, which is more expensive than regular. But it lasts longer and doesn't develop that nasty smell that original milk has after the carton has been opened for a few days.

Thanks, that's interesting. Is a liter of milk your largest size available? Does your milk come in bags like Canada's does? In the US we have 1/2 gallon or one gallon plastic jugs.

...and since you guys now know how to calculate thanks to mr tt...how about letting us know your gas prices now? ;)

We have 1.75 liter tetrapacks but the price difference is marginal.
