Thread: Have you ever fallen asleep in church?

  1. #11
Once I was asleep and my pager went off. Wife had to wake me up so I'd switch it off.

My worst was falling asleep (and snoring I think) during prayer time at the end of a Bible Study; while they were praying for me (yes Nikos I'd two glasses of wine that night). I woke up, looked around and for a second all was normal; then everyone else started laughing. It is still brought up from time to time.

I can remember being small and crawling under the pew to sleep cause the Sunday night services used to last for hours. Now at 54 I have to be careful cause if I get still I just conk out. Not good when your pastor is your daddy. He'd have no problem coming off the pulpit to wake me.

And Sunday mornings ..., I don't have my normal morning coffee as a coffee van comes after church finishes so sometimes I'm so close to being asleep

For those of us who aren't auditory learners I think it's more difficult. I have to stay very focused and sorta "stare" at my pastor to keep track of what he's saying. (which is why having my daughter in the service makes paying attention even more difficult)

I remember when I was in Toronto at the Soaking Prayer school one thing they stated..'It's ok to fall asleep'. A friend at church said she 'wraps herself in the Lord and goes to sleep each night' My pastor said when they were in Israel they asked the tour guide why the Jewish people praying at the wall rocked back and forth and the guide said, to stay awake...Jesus understands our physical make up and this reminds me of the night in gethsemane..His concern was not 'respect for Him' when He chastened them...it was the fact that they were still not understanding the magnitude of what was about to take place and His own awareness of what He was about to face....alone.

Years ago my husband and I attended a church briefly and years later I found a note in my journal here my husband asked me, 'Why is it so hard to stay awake in this church?' I remembered it was like there was a spirit of drowsiness that just filled that space and no matter how interested we were it was extremely hard to stay awake..that was a new experience, one I have not had since either.

As I often stay up later than I should on Saturday night I'd have to say "most"

I remember some meetings like that from 25 years ago. The sermon was interesting but most people had problems staying even half awake. The actual problem was summer temperatures hovering around 80 and really poor ventilation so it was entirely physical.
