100 Years Ago: County fair to utilize hand stamps for re-entry to curb ticket passing – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the third week of February 1923, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

    • A change has been made for entrance to the Weld County Fair this year. Visitors can still buy tickets to attend, and can leave and return free later in the day. But this year, instead of accepting the tickets a second time, the gatekeepers will be checking the backs of the visitors' hands to see if there is an ink checkmark. Too many times in years past, the visitors have been Passing on their tickets to relatives so they can visit the fair for free. They can't do that this year with the hand stamps.

    • Students at the many teaching colleges in the country have been ordered to avoid Chicago, Columbia and Northwestern universities, because they allow their female students to smoke. That would not be a good thing for future teachers.

    • A meeting of the citizens of Keota, Grover and New Raymer was held Thursday night to consider leaving Weld County and becoming their own county, to be named Pawnee County.

    • The Great Western Sugar Company of Greeley announced they are raising the price of sugar. The price is raised by 30 cents, bringing the price of a 100-pound bag of sugar to $4.90.

    • The United Presbyterian Bible School of Greeley held a party last weekend at the Bovard home on 10th. Boys who won the debates at Fort Collins High School were the honored guests, and were served a jolly meal.

    • EDITORIAL: With the oversupply of school teachers we have today, isn't it time to cut the teachers' pay and allow only the better teachers to stay on the job? At the same time, we contend that pool halls are detrimental to our town. If not, why are children excluded from entering the pool halls in Greeley? We would hope some action could be taken soon to overcome the problems of overpaid teachers and the bad reputation of pool halls.

    • A Denver newspaper is conducting musical concerts for the entire state by radiophone. There is also talk of broadcasting daily news. If this happens, will it lead to the ruin of newspapers in Colorado?

    • The disadvantage of whiskey in Greeley: two pints make one quart, two quarts make one party and one party makes for four first-class funerals.

    • The Greeley Rendering Plant this week is having a special on recovering the bodies of dead animals. All dead animals on private property will be removed for free. Call GR-JIIFI.

    — 100 Years Ago is taken from the original pages of the Greeley Tribune, the Weld County Republican, and when they merged, the Greeley Tribune-Republican....

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)
