100 Years Ago: Man arrested for stealing, selling car from Greeley – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the first week of February 1923, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

    • Leaders in Hollywood have said that Fatty Arbuckle cannot make any more motion pictures with himself as the star. It's apparently his overweight problems that have angered some political and motion picture producers.

    • A Cheyenne Wyo. resident was arrested by the Weld County Sheriff for stealing and selling a car from Greeley. George Anderson is in the Weld County Jail. He allegedly stole the car in Greeley, sold it to a man in Cheyenne, and then gave the man his home address so he could send payment checks for the auto. Law officers followed the address for payments and arrested Anderson at his Kansas home.

    • Because of prohibition in many U.S. States, illegal whisky has been made in the Bahama Islands and shipped to America. At last count, more than one million gallons of illegal booze has been shipped to America every year.

    • Greeley Mayor Todd will be addressing members of the Greeley Chamber and anyone else who would like to attend the dinner-meeting and hear what the Mayor has to say about city improvements. The cost for non-chamber members is 75 cents for the dinner.

    • EDIT HOT ITEMS: "The difference between precious little babies and brats, is that the brats usually live across the street from you."

    • Eight coal miners from the Frederick area were arrested this week for shooting guns in their mines. It is illegal to fire gunshots into the coal walls in the mine to loosen the coal. Too many miners have been injured by shooting the coal, then getting hit with the bullet as it ricochets from the walls.

    • A controversial film will be shown this week at the Rex Theater in downtown Greeley. "The Town That God Forgot" is a film about a huge flood that hit New York City. Citizens of New York claim their town was never forgotten by God, but was advantageous to review the flood and much-needed ground water.

    • Across America, law agencies are seriously considering a different punishment for drug dealers. Instead of locking them up in jail, the lawmakers are suggesting the drug dealers just be "lashed" on the street by a strong leather belt. Other drug dealers, after seeing the strong lashings, will refrain from dealing, the police said.
