100 Years Ago: Judge arrested for selling illegal whiskey to high schoolers – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the fourth week of January 1923, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

    • A County Judge in western Colorado was arrested this week for selling illegal bootleg whiskey to high school boys. Judge Michael Welsh is in jail today after sheriff's deputies discovered he was selling the illegal liquor to high school boys. The boys were regular customers of the judge and came to his house regularly to purchase the illegal booze.

    • Harry Brown of Greeley was elected President of the Colorado Cabbage Exchange of Northern Colorado. He will oversee the cabbage growing and purchasing by outside developers.

    • Miss Quinlan's class of sixth and seventh grade girls outclassed the boys of the same classes in a basketball game. The score was so bad, they wouldn't release it. However, the boys are obviously better in football.

    • There are renewed services on the Greeley-La Salle Bus System. You can arrive in La Salle on the train at 11:45 p.m., and then get on the bus and arrive in Greeley on a warm bus at 1:15 a.m.

    • Greeley Optometrist Edwin Haefeli announced he has found a cure for people with crossed eyes. However, you should see him immediately, because the crossed eyes will only get worse if not treated.

    • Many intelligence tests for grade-school children in Greeley had this question: "What is the difference between a fly and a butterfly?" The answers included the thought that a fly has to be shooed and a butterfly does not. "Also," said one student, "the butterfly makes butter but the regular fly does not."

    • From the Tribune Advertising Dept.: Real Estate ads range from 5 cents per line for six words, or 25 cents for more than six words.

    • At the Greeley Seventh Day Adventist Church, Pastor Roy Hay will discuss haunted houses, Ouija Boards and seances. "We will give the Bible answer to those questions," the pastor said.

    • At the farm home of I. Randell of Greeley, the honey is on sale. Bring your own bucket and purchase 12 pounds of honey for 50 cents. The best dill pickles you have ever tasted are on sale for $2 for 100 slices.

    • On Saturday night thieves broke into the Heathcock Grocery Store on 13th Street in downtown Greeley. They tore through a screened window to gain access to the store, then took away one cup of pennies. There were between 125 and 150 pennies in the cup.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
