Florida School District Put Bibles Back in School Libraries

A Florida taxpayer-funded school district has reversed course after they initially removed the Holy Bible from libraries when a citizen complained that God's Word "causes religious trauma syndrome."

The citizen filed a complaint with the Escambia County Public Schools alleging the Bible "promotes sexism, sex, violence, genocide, slavery, rape and beastiality."

The citizen went on to say the Bible's purpose is to "indoctrinate children in Christianity."

Schools were told Sunday to remove the Bible from their libraries, the Pensacola News Journal reported. But on Wednesday, that decision was reversed.

"The Bible is allowed in schools and has a place in education, according to Florida statues," Supt. Tim Smith told NorthEscambia.com.

The superintendent was referring to Florida Statute 1003.45 (1). It states, "the district school board may install in the public schools in the district a secular program of education including, but not limited to, an objective study of the Bible and of religion."

In short, the Bible is a textbook protected by state law.

The Escambia County Public Schools will not move forward with the reconsideration of the Bible as a library or instructional resource, and will immediately return all copies to the general collections in district libraries," the district said in a statement to NorthEscambia.com.

Not everyone was thrilled with the district's decision.

"When you ban the diary of Anne Frank, or To Catch a Mockingbird but are okay with the violence and incest of the old testament in the Bible.. That's Theocracy Not Democracy," one angry resident wrote on social media.

But most residents were happy with the decision.

Having it available to read doesn't mean Christianity is being forced on anyone.

Likewise, the Torah, Quran, Book of Mormon, etc should also be readily available.

"Allowing students to expand their world view on all religions should be something that's encouraged, not restricted, wrote one resident. "Kids need good literature. Literature that teaches right from wrong and that there is punishment for doing wrong."

The first sentence really had nothing to do with it. It was the second sentence.

"A" citizen filed a complaint. Gotta love it when one complaint can cause a book to be removed. The Bible. It's just the best selling book of all time.
