100 Years Ago, for the third week of August 1922, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:
In out-of-state news, famed Hollywood actor Douglas Fairbanks was arrested in Pomona, Calif. For speeding in his motorcar through the town. Police said he was speeding at 35 mph, and was taken into custody and then released. His wife, Mary Pickford, was also in the auto.
Meanwhile, in Greeley, the city Speed Cop chased after an auto going 35 mph, but couldn't catch it for several blocks. The driver will be fined $10.
G. Oliver of Briggsdale took his family for a two-week fishing trip in Wyoming. They fished every day and had a great time. They caught one fish.
Agriculture Secretary Wallace said this week that our government leaders must stop their arguing and fighting and get down to business. At this time, the farmer is most hjurt by their actions or lack of actions.
Last week's severe storm hit the Platteville area the hardest. ON the highway, eight large trees were blown over, blocking traffic. In addition many crops were damaged. At the Kuner pickle farm, they had 70 acres of pickles, but only 10 acres will be harvested.
Frank Jackson, the World Champion Horseshoe Pitcher, will be in Greeley to participate in a tournament at the Weld County Fair. He now lives in Iowa, but he grew up in Greeley.
A Greeley man was found guilty of passing a short check. He wrote a check for $12, but there was no money in the bank. The judge ordered him to pay the $12 back, and fined him another $12.
Spooning and love petting by groups of teenagers has been going on all summer after 10 p.m. at Island Grove Park. It has now been outlawed.
The LaSalle Sunday School baseball team played the Masters Team at home Sunday afternoon. Even though the Masters team had older boys, LaSalle won, scoring six runs in the last inning. The final score was 21-20.
Two Greeley men rescued some women from a strange accident. One woman was driving the auto and lost control. It ran off the road and over a cliff. They could see it down below, stuck on top of a grove of aspen trees. The men cut the trees down to lower the auto, then with the help of others used a rope to pull the auto back up to the road. Neither woman was hurt, and the auto had only a broken windshield.
