So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

You can be a member of the gong show.
1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
It looks like love triumphs over works, love does produce works though!

tschau, do you have something specific in mind, does someone need a coat?

I am not looking to judge people and specificly not anybody on the forum, it is not about blaming
I think we as christians have plenty of rules and we also are very much aware if others are sticking to them
like dress code for church
like not smoking
like voting for the wrong party
drinking wine
etc
there have been many discussions here about diifferent issues what a christian should do or not should do
But we never discuss about how hard it could be to give away one of two coats etc
We never discuss what would help to love that neighbour who is driiving you nuts
Let me give you an example:
If a man is against abortion and does not take time regularly to help a single mom with her boys or to visit regularly a family with a severe disabled child or whatever. Now people say that they do not know a single mom in need nor ..... That is no excuse for me, it is so easy to find people in need
I would like to share and talk about how we can be a light in the world by what we do, by how we live love, how we share Gods love, how to be peacemakers etc I want to learn more in this realm
To me there are many things mentioned in the new testament, they are maybe not commands but may be good guidelines.
I really appreciate the freedom we have through the blood of Christ
but
I am getting older and there are not so many years to come,
so I want to understand better what the New Testament is telling me to do. (not in a legalistic, but loving way)

I think you just gave a very good answer to your original question!
Seek and ye shall find.

There have been several times when the Lord Holy Spirit alerted me to a need a struggling person had (in regard to the "cloak"). Back in the Y2K days I drove a shuttle van out of Pontiac Mi for a staffing company. My riders were people fresh out of Jackson state pen. Many were halfway house addicts in recovery. My van folk and I had some powerful times in the Lord. I was pastoring a church on fire from the Brownsville days (a very high watermark in my life) and was led to take that job. The moment I appeared at the front desk to apply, the lady said "we have been waiting for you". That was the first of an unending flow of Heaven. Never had a bad shift there.
One day in November it was spitting snow and one of my riders was getting out for night shift. He was quietly shivvering. I was wearing a nifty Nascar Pennske Racing (official) jacket. I took it off and said here, it's yours now, thank Jesus for it. Never saw much of him after that but I know that God cared for him.
Heidi, this is what I meant. Love completely overrides any "must" or "have to". Sorry if I was not clear on what I meant.

We have many homeless people where I live. Lots of street corner beggars. I was in line at a burger king drive thru near where I live, and a guy walked up out of nowhere with a blanket wrapped around his shoulders and said I'm hungry. I immediately handed him $20 bucks through the car window without even hesitating. He disappeared as fast as he appeared. My wife said how do you know the street beggars aren't going to spend the money they get on drugs and alcohol? I don't! But when I do give the less fortunate a handout, I mention that Jesus loves them or if I'm not out of tracts, I put the money inside it and hand it to them. I can't judge these people on what they're going to do with the money. I can only obey the Spirit of God (Rm 8:14) and the word of God (Mt 5:42) when it comes to helping the homeless.
If you put God First, you have Him at Last.

Thanks for raising this important topic.
Jesus did issue many commandments/directives (not sure of the right word). He also said that "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments." (John 14:15, NASB.) Which makes it quite clear that anyone who is not keeping His commandments does not love Him.

Amen and 3 times in that same chapter.

Jesus was asked at one time what was the greatest commandment. The fact that He answered seems to mean that He thinks there is such a thing as commandments. He quoted from the written scriptures of His day which seems to validate that He thought the words were still valid. The commandment He quoted is also interesting. He said, "Hear oh Israel, the Lord our God is one." The word He used meaning 'Hear" was a quote from Hebrew and that word is Shmah. It means, "Listen and do." Then He gave two examples of what He means. Both are commandments to love.
(Yeah, I know, I can expect strident replies.)
