100 Years Ago: New Eaton schools superintendent to make $4,000 per year – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the fourth week of May 1922, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:


Henry Ford of Detroit, owner of the Ford Auto Manufacturing Co., announced he will run for President of the United States on an Independent ticket. A large crowd gathered to show support.

A prisoner escaped from prison by climbing a greased pole and jumping out a window. The pole had been greased by guards to prevent escapes, but the prisoner had bragged to others that when he was a boy, he won a huckleberry pie by climbing a greased pole faster that everyone else. They are still searching for him.

Eaton School District has hired a new superintendent. He is coming from Longmont, where he was the principle. He will get a $400 per year raise, which means his annual income will be $4,000.

In Sligo in Weld County, several homes are under quarantine because the residents have caught scarlet fever. No public meetings have been held here for two weeks because of the fever.

Their goal was to be married in one of the most historic and picturesque cities in the country, so a Nashville couple came to Evans and were married by a judge in the courthouse. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Speer left for the west coast right after the marriage.

Also in Evans. The high school commencement is next week, and there will be a variety of folk dances after the ceremonies. Some of the folk dances include: "How Do You Do, My Partner?," "Fair Rosie," and "How Oats, Peas, Beans and Barley Grow."

A lawsuit has been filed against the La Salle Town Board and Mayor to prevent them from putting a sewer system in the town. The people suing complained that taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for a sewage system.

Prof. Matthews, who received his degree from the Teachers College here, is a principal in Limon. This week, he got into an argument with school janitor, took out a gun and shot him. Matthews is in jail now, and the janitor in the hospital.

"The next time somebody says 'You big cheese, you!' don't get angry. Just head over to La Salle to see the new cheese factory. They are already buying 5,700 pounds of milk daily from local dairy farmers. Now, that's a Big Cheese!"

Windsor High School had a very large crowd for their graduation exercises two nights ago. The graduates marched to the front of the room to receive their diplomas. There were a total of 11 students in the Windsor senior class.
