and for the life of me, even though the picture is the right way on my computer, it's sideways here.
For the cans, could you make spacers so you can lay them on their sides?

I'm actually going to put cans in the cardboard "flats". I've tried the stacking them one on top of the other. They always wobble and fall down, and are a pain to use a FIFO (first in first out) inventory system with. The flats work because all 12 cans (or however many fit in there) are stable, and the whole flat can be moved at one time. I can also write the expiration date on the flat and easily see it. I shop mostly at ALDI (very inexpensive for the most part - carrots are still 44 cents/can, for example), and so I've been grabbing cardboard flats when I shop ... but I'm mostly buying flats of canned goods anyway.

Scott and I have talked about more shelving. We've used a food calculator to see what we should have compared to what we do have. We have two major holes in our inventory: vegetables (not enough) and fats and oils. I don't really like this food calculator. It doesn't really have enough meat calculated in for how we eat now... and I think it has more grains that we actually eat. That's concerning!!! If you have ALDI near you, check them out. The last time I was in my local ALDI flour and sugar had not risen in price and both where under $2 for flour (5 lb) and sugar (4 lb).

It's been a long time since I've posted on here.

I've really upped my canning game. Yesterday I did 3 canner loads.

We really like hearty soups during the winter, and it's nice to come home and open a jar, heat and eat. Last year I made split pea and ham soup and it was definitely a hit because we went through it quite quickly. Now I'm waiting for ham to go on sale to make another batch.

This summer I've been canning carrots, potatoes, lentil & beef soup, cooked hamburger, canned stew beef, cabbage slaw, tomatoes, made my own ketchup, beef bone broth, chicken bone broth, canned baked beans (so much better than store bought!). I've frozen green beans and carrots as well.

What I've seen is a shift to an ingredient pantry rather than a quick food pantry. What I mean is that I can go shopping in my pantry and come up with a meal pretty quickly without too much problem because I have the ingredients ready to go.

Additionally I found sources for grass-fed beef (local) and pastured pigs (friend in the U.P.). We rarely eat chicken, and I'm currently looking for a source for chicken rather than Costco. Dairy is off the table for us since Scott can't have any of it without immediate consequences and not just digestive consequences. He found that dairy causes immediately inflammation response in his lungs and triggers the worst asthma attacks.

Anyway, this year my pantry is less canned (tinned) goods and more jarred (canned) goods.

Those flats definitely do the job.
