Guardians of the Galaxy Director James Gunn Defends Chris Pratt amid Backlash over His Christian Fai

James Gunn, the director of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy movies, is pushing back against the recent criticisms of Chris Pratt because of his Christian beliefs.

Gunn responded to one person's call for Pratt's removal by asserting that he would never be replaced as Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord.

"For what? Because of your made-up, utterly-false beliefs about him? For something that someone else told you about him that's not true? Chris Pratt would never be replaced as Star-Lord but, if he ever was, we would all be going with him," Gunn wrote on Twitter.

As Christian Headlines previously reported, the criticism against Pratt came following the release of the teaser trailer for the upcoming MCU film Thor: Love and Thunder. In the trailer, Pratt is seen giving his team a pep talk and encouraging them to "look into the eyes of the people that you love" whenever they feel lost.

Shortly afterward, Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, is shown staring intensely into Pratt's eyes in an awkward moment.

This moment caused some social media users to poke fun at Pratt because of his Christian beliefs. Others used this as an opportunity to point out that Star-Lord was depicted as bisexual in a 2020 comic series for Guardians of the Galaxy.

In 2019, Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page, a transgender man formerly known as Ellen Page, publicly called Pratt out for attending an "infamously anti-LGBTQ" church. Page was talking about Zoe Church in Los Angeles.

At the time, Pratt insisted that his church "opens their doors to absolutely everyone."

According to Faithwire, NK News's social media editor Oliver Jia asserted that the attempts to cancel Pratt over the years are "based on nothing."

"There is zero evidence to suggest he holds any kind of homophobic or bigoted views. You're trying to cancel someone who doesn't exist," he tweeted last week.

Jia also pointed out that in this day and age, one can be canceled "purely on rumors, speculation, or literally made-up scenarios, and no one will question it." He added, "You can also be canceled for *not* taking a stance or position on something, even when you're not qualified to do so."

"Imagine being canceled for doing nothing," he continued. "This is a religion for vengeful people who think they're achieving something by ruining innocent people's lives."
