The Biden administration has swallowed transgender ideology without reservation, recommending "gender affirming" care for children — which include puberty blockers, hormones, and mutilating surgeries on a "case-by-case" basis. The administration apparently intends to impose these controversial views nationwide via the regulatory process.

Florida's Surgeon General, Joseph Ladapo, is having none of it. His office issues a state guidance with a dramatically different perspective. From, "Treatment of Gender Dysphoria for Children and Adolescents" (emphasis within the text):

Due to the lack of conclusive evidence, and the potential for long-term, irreversible effects, the Department's guidelines are as follows:

    • Social gender transition should not be a treatment option for children or adolescents.

    • Anyone under 18 should not be prescribed puberty blockers or hormone therapy.

    • Gender reassignment surgery should not be a treatment option for children or adolescents.

Based on the currently available evidence, "encouraging mastectomy, ovariectomy, uterine extirpation, penile disablement, tracheal shave, the prescription of hormones which are out of line with the genetic make-up of the child, or puberty blockers, are all clinical practices which run an unacceptably high risk of doing harm."

    • Children and adolescents should be provided social support by peers and family and seek counseling from a licensed provider.

In other words, don't alter the bodies of kids with gender dysphoria in ways that may be physically harmful, and in some cases, irreversible — while providing social and psychological assistance.

Of course, the ACLU and fellow travelers accused Ladapo of killing kids, as the mainstream media pretended that Biden absolutism on gender-affirming care is the uncontroversial best practice. From the Yahoo News story:

Physicians' groups, trans rights advocates and civil rights groups denounced the memo, which they say was a politically motivated attempt to sow confusion over established medical practices. The American Civil Liberties Union called the guidance a "desperate effort to sow lies and fear about transgender youth, their parents, and their health care."

"The Florida department of health is attempting to demonize life-saving, critical, medically-necessary healthcare for transgender youth," said Daniel Tilley, legal director for the ACLU of Florida in a statement.

The Endocrine Society, a global organization representing more than 18,000 physicians who specialize in studying and treating hormone issues, called on the state health agency to rescind its bulletin and "allow physicians to provide evidence-based care."

The new guidance is rife with misinformation, said Jack Turban, chief fellow in child and adolescent psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he researches the mental health of trans youths.

"It's shocking to see a public health organization spread healthcare misinformation," Turban said in an email to The Post. "There are false statements on nearly every line of this document."

Now, let's look at what the Yahoo News story left out. Florida is not an outlier on this issue, but merely the latest jurisdiction to hit the brakes on transitioning children. As I have noted here:

France's National Academy of Medicine: "The risk of over-diagnosis is real, as evidenced by the growing number of young adults wishing to detransition. It is, therefore, appropriate to extend the phase of psychological care as much as possible."

UK's National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence: As reported by the BBC, "The review found the evidence of clinical effectiveness and safety of gender-affirming hormones was also of "very low" quality. "Any potential benefits of gender-affirming hormones must be weighed against the largely unknown long-term safety profile of these treatments in children and adolescents with gender dysphoria," NICE said.

Sweden's Karolinska Hospital:"These treatments are potentially fraught with extensive and irreversible adverse consequences such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, infertility, increased cancer risk, and thrombosis. This makes it challenging to assess the risk/benefit for the individual patient, and even more challenging for the minors and their guardians to be in a position of an informed stance regarding these treatments."

Finland Official Guidelines: Based on thorough, case-by-case consideration, the initiation of hormonal interventions that alter sex characteristics may be considered before the person is 18 years of age only if it can be ascertained that their identity as the other sex is of a permanent nature and causes severe dysphoria..."Surgical treatments are not part of the treatment methods for dysphoria caused by gender-related conflicts in minors."

These are not exactly reactionary countries or institutions.

Nor does Yahoo News address the increasing reports of "de-transitioning," in which young adults have decried their transitions during youth and complained bitterly that they were not protected by adults.

As we have seen in recent years, the so-called "experts" in public health are often wrong and squelching public debate on controversial scientific/medical topics is hardly the best way to find the truth.

The future wellbeing of children is too important to be pressured into the stampede of our ongoing transgender moral panic. So, good for Dr. Ladapo. "The science" (as they say) on this delicate issue is far from settled, and all the tantrum throwing by promoters of "gender-affirming" care won't change that.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)
