100 Years Ago, for the third week of February 1922, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

The owner of Clements Bakery on 10th Street, was fined $5 and court costs this week in police court because of a fire in the alley behind his bakery. He apparently didn't dispose of the paper trash and a pile of it caught fire in the alley. Firefighters responded quickly and there was no damage to the building. The baker, T.A. Kotich, told the judge if there had been no wind, there wouldn't have been a fire. Judge Briggs reminded him that if there had been no trash, there wouldn't have been a fire.

They had a Valentine Dance at the Sigma Sorority at the college. The women in the sorority cut large hearts in half and sent them out to male students. When the party started, the man and woman would match the heart halves, and that would be their date for the evening.

While in the past the short-check writers just paid the fees and made the checks good, now they will be going to jail. "A bunch of jail sentences will do wonders for the short check epidemic," said Deputy D.A. Robert Smith.

This coming summer, the Street Railway System in Greeley will go out of business, and the streetcars will be replaced with motor buses. That means the railway tracks on the streets will be removed also.

Hunters from the big cities have been killing off the antelopes in Weld County, and soon the county may be without any antelopes. One farmer said he found areas where three or four antelopes have been killed and butchered. The state limit is one antelope per hunter.
