100 Years Ago: Ault men charged with failure to report disease, another charged with ‘mayhem’ – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the second week of January 1922, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper.

Dorothy Sherman, 19, of LaSalle got up in her sleep on Thursday morning, dressed herself in her brother's and father's warm clothing and started walking. She was awakened by a passing car while on the LaSalle-Evans bridge. She found an office and called her dad to pick her up.

With the icy conditions in Greeley, four people slipped on the ice and injured themselves. A woman sprained her wrist, one man suffered a deep scalp wound, and two men fractured their ribs.

A pack of wild dogs entered the hog pen owned by John Lewis of Severance and killed five hogs. The dogs try to eat the hogs while they are alive. If one of the hogs dies, the dogs will go after the other live hogs. When contacted, the owners of the dogs said they didn't have the heart to kill the dogs, but they would pay the farmer for his lost hogs.

With the Small Pox epidemic raging, three men in Ault have been charged with failure to report the diseases in their families to the Health Department. It is a state law that all Small Pox cases must be reported.

The first Greeley Fire Department call for 1922 was to the barbershop on 7th Avenue. It was a pile of greasy rags behind the shop, and nothing else was damaged.

The Longmont Jail is quickly filling up because the town marshal has made so many bootlegging arrests. Hundreds of gallons of homemade booze have been confiscated. The Marshal said the sale of illegal booze in Longmont has been overwhelming.

Meanwhile, in Greeley, a bootlegger was arrested when he tried to sell a gallon of "likker" to a sheriff's deputy.

A Fort Collins man was in Ault when he got into an argument with an Ault resident. The Ault man bit him on the finger, and has been charged with "mayhem." The Fort Collins man lost his finger due to blood poisoning, and it appears his arm may have to be amputated at the elbow.

After an editorial in this newspaper, the Chief of Police in Denver ordered the confiscation of smutty magazines. The editorial pointed out that the magazines feature nudists and are being read mostly by school children. It's against the state law that forbids the sale of obscene magazines. Two of the publications which have been stopped are "Purple Pup" and "Trashy Truck" magazines.
