    BY HiS STRIPES

What does it mean when we say, "BY HiS STRIPES I AM HEALED?" Is it true that this is not speaking about physical healing but only about spiritual healing? I hear ministers repeat that phrase in reference to physical healing. But most scholars say it is talking about being healed of sin.

    What say you?

    Matthew
14 And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever. 15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. 16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

All in the same passage. The stripes would be for sin and sickness. But lets just say it wasn't. The very fact that Jesus took those stripes for the ROOT CAUSE of all curse, which is sin, when you take care of the sin problem then you take care of all the fruit of sin. One of them being sickness and disease.

WHEN YOU TAKE CARE OF THE ROOT YOU TAKE CARE OF THE FRUIT. So when you deal with sin you deal with everything that came because of it: sickness and disease, lack/poverty, bondage, oppression, yokes, etc, etc, etc. This is why teaching healing in the atonement is so important. Because if all can be free of sin due to atonement, then they can be free of every bondage due to the atonement.

    1 John 3
8 ...For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

Anyway, even if healing wasn't in the atonement, there are other ways to prove it's Gods will to heal. If there wasn't even a promise of healing in the Bible, I can still prove that it's God's will to heal all by one scripture that doesn't even mention healing. :)

Thanks! Excellent answer! But I don't see how you can prove that it's God's will to heal all by a scripture that doesn't even mention healing.

God is no respecter of persons. I think it's in the OT 3 times and the NT 3 times. If you can find in the Bible where God has ever healed anybody, delivered them, set them free, etc, etc, etc, then you can stand on that verse to get the same thing. You could look for precedent of what God has done and then believe him for the same thing based on that verse.

As a matter of fact, when I said precedent, Finney in his Revival Lectures had 3 'P' on what to use to believe God. First is obviously the promises. One was precedent, where He had done something before. One on prophecy, and he used Daniel as an example of where he saw the prophecy about them being delivered in 70 years and began to fast and pray. Paul also told Timothy to do a good warfare according to the prophecies he was given. If it's truly a prophecy from God you can stand on it like you would any other word from God.

    Hello brother Nikos.
I may be able to answer your question by observing Communion.
We know that the grape juice (I don't use wine) signifies the Blood, which was shed for the remission of our sins, and thus cleanses us and save us.
It also makes us eligible for healing. However, the Bread specifically represents His body which was broken for us. No bone of the Lords was broken on the cross, instead, Jesus flesh was flayed from His back with a scourge. This cruel instrument of torture had bits of metal and broken pottery attached to the leather strands,
and opened up Jesus body to the bone; and then His flesh was pierced by thorns and nails. This breaking through beatings and lashings answers how His body was broken for us. It was at the whipping post during that flogging, that He willingly received the stripes on His flesh, that paid for our healing. I might add that the Hebrew word Isaiah uses for "healing" is rapha' and is defined as "to mend" and "to cure".

Jesus Himself draws a distinction between the purpose of the shed Blood (Communion juice), and the purpose of His broken Body (Communion bread) when He said:

For this is my blood of the New Testament,
which is shed for many for the remission of sins
    (Matt 26:28).

And He took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying,
This is My body which is given for you; this do in remembrance of Me
    (Luke 22:19).

The implication is that the Blood alone was sufficient for the remission of sins. What is the significance of the Body? 'Jesus Blood was shed for our salvation, His Body was broken for our healing. The stripes or wounds Isaiah is referring to at the whipping post are the same as the brokenness of the Lord's body at the cross, as presented in Communion! Through these stripes, or through His broken body, "we are healed." The atonement for all mankind took place at the cross. The Blood was shed for our sins, the stripes upon His body were for our healing. Jesus has borne our sickness and diseases with the same completeness that He has borne our sins.

I can give personal testimony to this this biblical truth. The Lord has healed me on several different occasions, and just recently a few days ago.
Last Tuesday morning I got up at 3am for work with excruciating pain in my right ankle. I was tempted to call in to take a sick day off since I'm on my feet all day.
But instead, I sat down and prayed about the situation, took communion, and quoted Matthew 8:17, That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias (Isaiah) the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
There was no sudden change or relief immediately, but I hobbled out of the house to my car and went to work. I limped into the driver's room, then limped in the yard to my garbage truck and limped all day on the collection route. At the days end when I got back to the yard and got out of my truck, I noticed the pain had subsided somewhat in my ankle. The next morning it was feeling much better and it was not as bad as it was the day before. By Friday, all the pain was gone and I was not limping anymore. PTL
If you put God First, you have Him at Last.
