100 Years Ago, for the third week of November 1921, from the pages of the Greeley-Tribune Republican newspaper.

» A Greeley man had a grouch against a Wellington resident and used an ax to smash into the man's house-shack. He destroyed a new stove in the shack, which was the ornament of the owner's pride. The man is now in jail.

» Harvey Vanderlip saved the day at the Sterling Theater in downtown Greeley. When a fuse box in the theater caught fire, Vanderlip ran from his seat, scrambled up a light pole and pulled the burning box from the pole. He then fixed the line circuit so the theater didn't lose power.

» The Great Western Sugar Co. advises all beet farmers to plow their fields now, burying 12 tons per acre of manure under the soil. The manure will partially decompose before spring planting, and make the soil increase the beet yield.

» A Greeley man, angry with his wife for visiting her parents without his permission, beat her with a strap. She then fled back to her parents' house, and he came after her with a club. He was stopped by his wife's father, who chased him away with an irrigation shovel. The man is now in the city jail.

» ADVERTISEMENT: "Mr. Farmer, if you have turkeys, now is the time to sell them while prices are right. I will pay you 28 cents a pound for No. 1 turkeys. The price is good until Nov. 17." J.E. Johnson, telephone Greeley 125.

» New words are appearing in public discussions, now and then. For example, an old-time real estate agent is now a "realtor." And the once-named undertaker is now a "mortician."

» Two sisters from Oklahoma have moved to Greeley and purchased the White Grocery at 938 9th Ave. Their new store will be named The Woman's Grocery and will sell items that will appeal only to housewives.

» A reader has sent a letter explaining that he is a "water finder," using a forked branch. He can't explain why it forcibly points down when he passes over water, but it does. He helps farmers finder water underground. Also, he said if he attached a piece of lead or copper to the branch, it will tilt down when passing over those minerals.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
