Lake Superior and the SS Edmund Fitzgerald
Today is the 46th anniversary of the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. This is an interesting piece done by a lady who is a real mortician and has her own YouTube channel.

Many of us locals like to recall the memories of this great morning. I was a young 18yr old caretaker of a wealthy association called L'Abre Croche' on the lakeshore here in the Petoskey area on Little Traverse Bay. I reported to work that morning knowing full well it was a storm of the century, mostly wind and 6" of snow.
I was greated by my manager with a solemn look on his face. We knew about the Fitz but could not reason with the terrible damage at the lakeshore. The Manoogian house (pffft cottage??) had a gigondous picture window blown in and shattered on the floor of the great room. As I look over the angry bay, there was the stunning view of 4 lakes freighters at anchor in our bay nestled between Harbor Springs and Petoskey to wait out the storm in relative safety, though we had 10' waves out in the middle of the bay. My work centered on grabbing the chainsaw and cutting up the 36 windfallen Hemlock trees. Mr Anderson said, "carry the cut wood and branches off into the swamp and make it look natural". Took me the month to do it. What a storm.

Here is the full compilation of the last radio transmissions and the mindblowing request of the Coast Guard station begging McSorley to turn the Arthur Anderson about and go back out on a rescue search for survivors.

We toured the museum freighter Valley Camp dry docked at the Soo. The entire ship is facinating. The holds are dedicated to displaying Great Lakes maritime artifacts including the lifeboat from the Fitz wreck. When standing at the bow and observing the sheering of those heavy rivets, then you get a glimpse of the destructive forces present during the wreck.

I remember going through the SS Valley Camp when I was a youngster.
