100 Years Ago: Windsor woman outwits armed robber; a new use for automobiles is found – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the second week of September 1921, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper.

» They have found a new use for automobiles. Attach a hose to the exhaust pipe and run it down a rat's hole at your house. The rats living there will zoom away and not return.

» Column: "Some men are born rich, some sweat for their money, and some get jobs on government boards."

» Good watches lose accuracy by exposure to a magnetic field. A Greeley war veteran was having problems with his watch, and he found that the steel in his artificial leg had become magnetized. He went to the light company, and they demagnetized his leg. The watch works perfectly now.

» Isn't it strange that the man who snores the loudest is the first person to fall asleep in the Pullman overnight train car?

» A dozen hoboes, sneaking a ride through Weld County, were held up by three armed men. The robbers took a total of $200 in cash from the 12 hoboes. They then forced all of the hoboes to jump from the train. The three robbers have been arrested.

» The price of flour increased in local stores this week because farmers are getting more for their wheat. The flour price went up 10 cents per 100 pounds.

» Column: "That man who was found dead in a telephone booth probably got the right number on the first try, and the shock killed him."

» With the increase of women in the courthouse, items in courtrooms are being taken away. Because women don't chew tobacco, there is no longer a need for spittoons and sawdust boxes in court.

» In Windsor, Mrs. Wilson was held at gunpoint by a robber. He pressed his pistol against her head and ordered Mrs. Wilson to open the safe and give him all the money. She opened the safe and scooped all of the money into her lap. Closing her legs, he couldn't see the money. She pulled out a handful of bills and gave it to the robber, and he escaped on an auto. Mrs. Wilson still had $6,000 in family money, hidden under her dress.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)

Been enjoying, these keep them coming. But what does this mean, how would it become magnetized and how does the light company demagnetize it?

You'd have to know the intricate inner workings of the wheels, gears etc to grasp what magnetics would do to throw imbalances into the close proximity of the parts. Remember reading the ads for watches that had "jewelled movement"?

Oh and the demagnetizing from an electric generation plant, google "degaussing" and see what comes up.
