I believe that we need to respect the expected norms of any church we attend, If it is not the desire of the church that hats be worn, then out of respect for that church, we should comply. As I said if someone does not comply, it is not a sin. I agree that wearing a hat may not matter to God, but our attitudes do concern the Lord.
Of course, if we are looking to anoint a King, a hat is not important, but our respectful attitude toward others may be.

I do not understand why we as christians need all these extra rules.
I am busy enough with a few basic rules, like loving my next like myself, like sharing the gospel,... When I am done with them I may forward to "keep the church fossils feeling important" rules.

Kick the Masonic Lodge members out first, then go for the hat wearers.

There are plenty of believers who would find some of the things we all say as extra rules as well. This can apply to many situations and circumstances.
Believers who may feel free in one area can also put pressure on others in other areas.
If you are free from hats etc. then rejoice but calling others fossils isn't exactly showing the love of God

And don't forget the snorers. (Or place electric shock devices under the seats, with activation buttons at the pulpit.)

In Campus Life meetings (circa 1982) we had a thing called "the throne". It was a hidden, random seat rigged with a capacitor, battery and remote switch. You only knew it was there in the room when someone stood and let out a loud shriek.

It's really not a question of rules. It's a matter of not offending a brother or sister in the Lord. We have the "right" to wear a hat in church, but if we know a weaker brother or sister will be bothered, we then surrender our right to wear a hat--or any other practice that offends.
