Explored a new lake not far from home. Gorgeous fall evening, 37deg and pike were hitting.

Currently awaiting solid ice so we can start fishing the hard water. God willing.

Precious few small lakes have any kind of ice up here right now. Last night after church I stopped in at the public access to a lake froze over less than a week. In the glow of my truck headlights I stepped out on the fresh ice and augered a hole or two that measured just under 3". Today I went back with my gear and in a driving snow squall pulled up a bucket and hooked up a minnow. In less than 10 minutes I was fighting a 27" pike. My first of the hardwater season.

During the night hours one of my fishing lakes re-froze after the 3 day warm front. I'm fishing on Christmas/New Years week.

How thick does the ice have to be for you to be comfortable on it?

If the depths are over my head I want 5". If fishing 3' or so like last week it doesn't matter much but 2 1/2" works. The Striker Ice snow suits have flotation that is a lifesaver so that gives me peace of mind and crazy warm.

Haven't been catching a lot lately but maybe "the bite" will be on after this frigid weather comes through. In the meantime I still get out on the ice. The past 2 weeks has been a learning experience with the new underwater camera. It's a trip watching fish swim up to the bait, take it in and zip their way up to the hole. This has revolutionized my fishing fun.
Here is a pic of a largemouth swimming by the camera as it eyes the bait minnow. This is in 10' of water with camera suspended a foot off the bottom.
Here is a jumbo perch that simply had to eat the "shiner" minnow. I watched it devour the minnow whole and knew exactly when to set the hook. Tonight was a fun night though I'm disappointed not to have had a pike come in.
