100 Years Ago: Hail damages crops; Bill to legalize medicinal beer – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the third week of July 1921, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

Large, heavy hail hit farms west of Eaton last night, causing damage to beets and wheat crops. The beets will probably recover, but wheat on some farms was destroyed.

A.L. Mumper was fined $5 and court costs this week in City Court. The fine was for passing a standing street car in his auto. Although he protested the case, the judge fined him anyway.

A shivaree, or mock wedding, was held at the Straight home in Prairie View Monday night. A large crowd gathered for the celebration.

A new bill coming before the U.S. Senate will likely be passed, according to local representative. It would legalize medicinal beer.

The largest pig in U.S. history has now been stuffed and mounted for display. At the West Virginia museum, the stuffed pig is four feet tall, seven feet long, and before stuffing, weighed more than 1,000 pounds.

The lively interest in golf here, which began in the spring, has now almost disappeared because of the summer heat. Golfers are conserving their energy until the weather gets cooler. Probably several weeks.

A trucker had his driver's license suspended for a year because he was a "Road Hog." It appears many truckers feel more important than other drivers because of the size of their truck.

Four young teen-age farm workers have been brought into the sheriff's office here for causing disturbances at a school dance. They were released until their court date so they can continue to farm.

At about the same time, a group of summer college students were questioned by police after they yelled at street cars to stop the vehicles, then refused to get in. When the cars started up again, the boys again chased them, but still refused to get on board. No arrests were made, but the boys were warned by police.

A third set of boys was arrested and fined $9 in court for riding their bicycles on the city sidewalks. Those fines are usually higher than adults get for speeding in their autos.

    — 100 Years Ago is taken from the original pages of the Greeley Tribune, the Weld County Republican, and when they merged, the Greeley Tribune-Republican.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)
