If you feel the Holy Spirit who is leading you is telling you to shoot someone, by all means do so!
I have not found a single scripture that implies in certain circumstances we are left to our own devices and God is just fine with whatever we choose..

    Just sayin...

Well I guess you must be one who believes there are times when we don't need to be following the Holy Spirit? Or times when He just sits back and says, 'You do what you want. I don't have an opinion.' Or better yet times when He says, 'Go ahead kill your enemy.'?

    Scripture please..

Quest, I dont know why you feel a need to argue with me, I was just taking your statement at face value, thats all. The next time I feel that the Holy Spirit tells me to kill someone because the Holy Spirit says he will eventually become a terrorist then I guess Ill just have to take your advice.

Good point, and it deserves to be addressed, in my opinion.

We can't ignore the teachings that have been provided to us through scripture, but I think we can rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance on how to interpret those teachings in modern contexts, especially in situations in which various teachings appear to be in conflict with each other.

For example, there's nothing specific in the Bible about refraining from dumping industrial pollutants into the public water supply, but with the influence of the Holy Spirit (and hopefully a bit of common sense), we ought to realize that the earth is a gift to us from God and that we ought to take good care of it. (Genesis 2:15). And although the Bible doesn't say so, in my (hopefully spirit-led) view, it seems clear to me that the government ought to have the authority to prevent such actions, using force if necessary.

In the case of a potentially violent act by one person against another, it seems to me that we have obligations towards both the attacker and the victim. Yes, we must love the attacker, but we must also love the victim, and refraining from any kind of intervention seems to assign a higher priority to the former. I'm not saying that one should go into the situation wildly and just start shooting. First, one ought to try to resolve the situation peacefully. Only if this is unsuccessful should one employ force, and if one does, only the minimum necessary. In my view, force may be employed for the purposes of protection, but not for the purposes of vengeance.

Good post...in all situations of life the Holy Spirit will speak and guide us through revelation of scripture and by conviction. The danger Christians face of presupposing and predetermining actions is probably our greatest weakness. For instance while we should predetermine to not lie we must also expectantly rely on Holy Spirit to give us HIS wise answer. The same is true with this topic, as many have already predetermined that in 'this or that situation' I know what I would do and I already know God would approve' we somewhat negate relying on HIS LEADING when that situation arises.

I asked this on another thread and on a different topic...Does God expect us to be 100% LEAD BY the Holy Spirit or does He leave some things for our own judgment and human reasoning?

Years ago in reading 'Practicing the Presence of God' it became clear to me that most of my day was spent making my own decisions. As I read scripture I worked at aligning my decisions with scripture but I could not honestly say they were SPIRIT led...that was presumed...I realized that in crisis situations we rely primarily on what we know and not the leading of the person of the Holy Spirit because we have not become trained and discipline.

A good example of this is giving the 'right scriptural answer' when the Spirit wants to reveal the 'heart' but we presume rather than being IN tune.

This is a daily training process that prepares us but if not practiced daily we won't BE prepared, in tune, able to HEAR Holy Spirit because our own flesh voice has been allowed to be dominant.
