100 Years Ago: Improperly disposed grease causes odor – Greeley Tribune

100 Years Ago, for the fourth week of March 1921, from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:

Weld County Health Officer Gibbeon was called to the neighborhood of 16th Street and 9th Avenue when residents complained of a foul smell. He found that a neighbor had cleaned out his grease trap and dumped the grease in his back yard, creating the bad odor. The resident was fined $5 in city court and ordered to dispose properly of the grease.

Byars Co., a national shoe store, has ordered 9,584 pairs of shoes for their chain. The order has work shoes and fashion shoes along with shoes for children.

A warning has been issued to local mothers about the books their children may read. "The wrong book may cause a child's mental convulsion, and mar the child's whole life." The warning did not state which books were bad for children.

The Domke Monumental Works is desperate for a stone-cutter. Although they pay more than $1 per hour, the high wage hasn't attracted any workers. Stonecutting appears to be a lost art.

Dr. J.G. Crabbe of Greeley was in Denver this week and parked his auto on Colfax. Somehow the brakes on the auto loosened and the driverless car careened down Colfax at a high speed. It hit three pedestrians, decapitating one man. The auto is a Buick Touring Car, owned by the Teachers' College here. It was later learned that the auto was jarred by a passing streetcar, causing it to roll downhill.

Many students missed school this week due to colds and high fevers. We believe it's probably whooping cough that is passing through our area.

In high school basketball, Milliken beat Brighton, 37-5. The Brighton boys hadn't played much and didn't score a single basket. Their five points came from free throws.

In Geneva Court, Colo., Rev. Bacher was declared dead because he was ill and stopped breathing. A death certificate was issued and a funeral was planned. However, he awoke after 14 hours, surprised to see his room filled with funeral flowers. The funeral has been postponed indefinitely.

In the moonshine trial of Robert Smith, the sheriff brought a great amount of evidence into the courtroom. That included a large still, a cooling tank, a wash basin, a cooking stove and a large cream can filled with moonshine. The trial was attended by a large number of people, attracted by the smell of illegal whiskey.

How do you properly dispose of grease???

I save used ziplock bags and put the cooled grease/fat in there and put it out with my trash. We're on a septic system so I know not to put it down the drain.

I mostly have small amounts to dispose of so I usually sop it with a paper towel and dispose of it in the trash. When I have used produce bags I put messy trash in one of those and tie a knot in it. I also save gently used zip lock bags for messy trash items.

I pour it into a empty can and dispose of it in the trash. If I don't have a can, I'll pour it in a coffee cup until it's cool, then scrape it off into the trash.
