It might be easier of we dumped the word "tithing", and just said "tenthing", for that is what the word actually means. In that context, @wheeze was therefore not tithing or tenthing because 10% places limits on what he might freely choose to do.

Like Wheeze, I prefer to give according to freewill and where the spirit leads. That means that sometimes I give 0% and other times will give 500+%.

The best thing about freewill giving is when you listen to the spirit and then send a cheque (check) and subsequently find that it is right to the penny for a need that you knew absolutely nothing about.
As far as I am concerned, the legalism of tithing blocks our hearing of the spirit.

About 3 years ago, I ran my car into flood water which instantly destroyed the diesel engine, rendering the car as scrap. At that time I had no income whatsoever, so there was no possible way we could replace it. Nevertheless the moment it happened a wave of peace ran through my spirit and I knew that God had a plan to deliver me.
I hailed a passing 4x4 driver who hauled me out of the water and to a dry car park further up the road. I then walked home. A friend who was seriously ill had previously asked me to look after his car so that I could run him around, so I was not immediately stuck for wheels. However that was due to end in about 2 weeks time.

The day before my borrowed car came to an end, a friend who lives several hundred miles away called me out of the blue. "I'm getting a new car, do you want my old one?"
For a moment I couldn't stop laughing to answer him, so he kept repeating the question until I told him what had happened. The even funnier thing was that it was the same make and model as my dead car.

God had just told my friend to go to a dealer and choose a replacement car for himself because He was going to give him one. The condition God gave was that he had to give his current car away, which is why, knowing nothing, he phoned me.

Even more interesting was that about 12 years previously, as led by the whisper of the Holy Spirit, I had sent this same guy who at that time I barely knew, a cheque for a certain amount the Lord told me.
At that time he was working for a ministry on a pittance and again God had told him to look for a new car which the Lord then showed him. He had some of the money, but the car was way above that amount. But as he sought the Lord for provision, my cheque arrived and matched the precise amount he needed to buy that car.
After phoning me with the offer of the car, the Lord set in motion someone else who gave my friend the money sufficient for the nearly new model he had chosen.

Tithing is so boring in comparison to giving abundantly according to the Holy Spirit. Non believers false religionists and rogues can tithe because it doesn't need God. Only the Holy Spirit can direct us to be front and centre to his financial system.

    Very interesting post. Thanks!

The real thrill is to serve the Lord in obedience. There is nothing like it. Not just a now and then thrill but a continual thrill of faithfully tithing unto Him. When I put my tithe in the offering tomorrow, I will have an extreme sense of God's presence and the satisfaction of knowing that I have followed his biblical teachings.

Now, if you could actually establish that tithing was TAUGHT to the NT church, then it would actually be a "biblical teaching".

It has been established and it is biblical. May the Lord open your eyes to see God's eternal Truth!

I'd rather call it a tradition. A Catholic tradition much like infant baptism. People can baptize their children or have a minister bless them of course, my church does the latter - probably because the corresponding Lutheran tradition is strong here so families expect to gather for some kind of a name celebration. That doesn't mean that there is grounds for making any kind of a doctrine out of it.
