    Nothing new under the sun.

From a FB post today from someone doing seminary training.

Marcion left his native Pontus about 140 and went to Rome, where he became influential in the Roman church. He believed Judaism was evil and, therefore, he hated the Jewish Scriptures.

He also hated the the Jehovah described in the Old Testament. He set up his own canon of Scripture, which included a truncated gospel of Luke and ten of the letters of the New Testament associated with the name of Paul.

Although his business made him wealthy enough to be a real help to the Roman church, Marcion was expelled for holding to these ideas. He then founded his own church that rejected the God of the Old Testament for 'a god of love' revealed in Jesus Christ.

Things don't change do they. Saw a similar "God is love ..." sentiment on a video about Hillsong a few days ago (not a new video, but a rehash); and had my pastor say that our church "would never say that God punishes people" and called the Last Supper "a dinner party" (yes, he actually said that).

I'm sure you've seen like things. And the reason they happen again and again and again .... is because unlike the FB user no one studies Church history and learns from previous mistakes.

Sadly it will be costly, (James 3:1) "Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment."

I agree, church history is extremely important but even more is the importance of seeing why the Old Testament is as essential today as the New Testament. That is why the study of theology is so important. To understand why God did what everyone thinks is evil in the Old Testament, one must have a grasp of the nature and true character of God and His relationship to Israel.
