I ask because I am considering seeing a counselor....my trust issues (more at 'lack' of trust) are so deeply embedded within me I wonder if they'll ever go away. I thought I had overcome them and had to an extent until something happened that shook me and showed me that the issue is still very much rooted.
You didn't ask me so feel free to ignore this post..

After suffering from depression and essentially raising myself, The Holy Spirit quickened the passage that He is our counselor and I consciously asked Him to counsel me out of that dark place...He did...I believe human counselors rely far more on what they learn which, IMHO, is a watered down with secular humanism, than who they KNOW for guidance in counseling...and the best ones that can be trusted are the ones who point to Holy Spirit as THE counselor and them as merely a tool He will use to point them to HIM...
Having said that I would add..if the HOLY SPIRIT is leading you to a counselor, by all means, GO..

Personally, I trust God... everyone else pays cash!

God's promises and His Spirit really are the only counseling you need cause even if you do start seeing someone as your "counselor", they still aren't perfect.

I always remind myself to believe the best of people unless I see that they don't take God's Word seriously then I refrain from getting too involved unless the Holy Spirit gets on me to do so.

That, and maintain an attitude of forgiveness. The important thing is when you get off track, repent quickly and get right back on track... don't stay off track (not paying attention to the Holy Spirit, and acting on God's promises).

The best thing any Christian can do is above all else... keep your personal relationship with the Lord fresh as He is the first and primary person you are called to engage with.

As a young guy, I used to go for counseling and sometimes it's not Word based and gets over in to psychology which is the wisdom of man and not the wisdom of God. Just cause someone means well does not always mean you get the Word of the Lord.

Our process of becoming like Jesus never stops - sometimes it even goes backwards as our old self rears its ugly head...we go from Glory to Glory - as soon as one problem/behavior/mindset is conquered, God points out another....I will never be fully complete until Jesus comes...then I will see through clear glasses
