I was confused by this image of the incident, wondered why they would use all this force. Turns out this is exactly what police are trained to do in cases of excited delirium.

They haven't used this footage too often in the coverage of the incident.

Lane eventually asked, "Should we roll him on his side?" Chauvin responded, "No, staying put where we got him."

When Lane said he was "worried about excited delirium," Chauvin said, "That's why we have him on his stomach," the statement reads.

In excited delirium, ensuring staff and patient safety is critical, and a minimum of 5 individuals should be used for mechanical restraint application (one for each limb, one for head and neck).

Excited delirium has provoked some controversy, with some police critics claiming the term was "invented" to defend the excessive use of force by police officers. In fact, excited delirium is nothing new. Descriptions of cases bearing this phenomenon date back 150 years. The American Medical Association has traced events that look much like what we call excited delirium today to what was then called Bell's Mania. In its resolution 401, A-08, the American Medical Association stated:

Excited delirium is a widely accepted entity in forensic pathology and is cited by medical examiners to explain the sudden in-custody death of individuals who are combative and in a highly agitated state. Excited delirium is broadly defined as a state of agitation, excitability, paranoia, aggression, and apparent immunity to pain, often associated with stimulant use and certain psychiatric disorders. ... Speculation about triggering factors include sudden and intense activation of the sympathetic nervous system, with hyperthermia, and/or acidosis, which could trigger life-threatening arrhythmias in susceptible individuals.

The papers also said that an autopsy revealed nothing to support strangulation as the cause of death. The exam concluded that the combined effects of being restrained, potential intoxicants in Floyd's system and his underlying health issues, including heart disease, likely contributed to his death.

Floyd's family was seeking an independent autopsy.

"Now if he didn't die from that, what did he die from?" Nichols said. "And if there's a determination that he died from something other than the injury to his neck, being choked out, not being able to breathe, the argument is going to be the officer was still participating in his legal duty and he did not die because of what the officer was doing."

I guess all the rioters will now apologise and give back all the stuff they've stolen and all damage will be repaired.

The media has to accept it's responsibility in all this. Nothing should be reported till all the facts are in.
