The link above is to a 350 page book (in full) on John G Lake's life published in 2002 and the tone is friendly. In the appendix it says :

"1887-1891 Lake apparently studies at Garrett Biblical Institute (close to Chicago) and
reads the course of study set forth in The Doctrines and
Discipline of the Methodist Episcopal Church."

Page 49 says "A professor of Science, probably associated with the Northwestern University
faculty, claimed to have known seminarian Lake and described him as a "brilliant
student." Lake was noted as having a superior aptitude for Science, particularly
chemistry and theoretical and applied electricity. He even gained a reputation as a "master mystic.,,32"

    The footnote says :

"32 Spokane Press, 16 July 1924, no page reference, newspaper clipping, Spokane
Public Library, Local History Collection, citing Professor A. A. Bettes. "

The book I have (just now peeked at it) is compiled by Kenneth Copeland Ministries and is 549 pages. There is a good amount history on his works.

Atheists on CARM twenty years ago frequently complained that some Christians were "lying for Jesus". The idea seemed to be that since they were telling the truth in the larger sense therefore lying about smaller things was justifiable as long as the lie wasn't too easy to unravel. I'm wondering if maybe the same applies in the other direction as well. Meaning that to some people everything supernatural is nonsense and lying about details is okay as long as it contributes to the larger task of promoting "the truth" about supernaturalism.

That is the one I read many years ago. I walked away with the impression that John G. Lake was a man of incredible faith.

There has been nonsense on both sides. In the purist sense, signs and wonders are to assault reasoning of the staunchest atheists and "religious" alike. With the embellishments come much shaking of the head but if Christ is preached it seems all is ok. I cant remember which revivalist said it but I like it: "Lord, if it's possible, please send revival without the fleshly indulgences but if that is not possible, then send revival with flesh and all.". Or something like that.

To me none of the miracles are any problem, I've seen too many of all kinds myself to feel like rejecting any of it in general. But as the author of the book I linked points out, Lake may have had a life long problem with exaggerations. Inaccuracies including jokes may have been part of it. Did he really found those two newspapers ? Maybe you would be able to find out his involvement in the founding of the Soo Times of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. That's about 100 miles from where you live ?
