Thread: The Rise and Attraction To Jewish Roots

The Rise and Attraction To Jewish Roots

This isnt a new phenomena but somehow I still cant grasp the pull of Judaism on the Church, moreso and especially on the Charismatic and Pentecostals. I have watched friends go whole hog Rabbinical and reject Christ. Others have strictly followed the Law and keep a foot in the door of the Church. Some are aggressive toward believers (modern day troublers of Galatia) and some are mere participants and enjoy the “fullness” of the Old Testament.

There came to join us in a church we pastored recently, a couple well known in the area. They said they wouldnt attend cookouts, receptions, funeral dinners and fellowship dinners because it sickens them when others are cooking pork and unclean food. One day they visited my office to “enlighten” me on Acts 10:9-15, Peter’s vision. After friendly discussion with the husband (I have know them almost 20yrs), I turned to the wife and point blank asked if her regimen to the dietary Law was for righteousness or for the “better” diet. I had already said how much I enjoy crab legs and lobster. She only danced around the subject twice until I put her into a theological corner and asked her if I was going to Hell, is this a matter of salvation or freedom in the work of Jesus Christ on the cross. She backed down and said it was a choice of godly diet. Then I asked they would not trouble others that are not following the diet they are.

We came to a good conclusion but I still shake my head. Isnt Jesus enough?

It's as if it makes one more 'spiritual' or something. I don't get it either. It happens a lot.

I know some people that won't eat pork and things due to the OT, but it doesn't affect them like your post. I'm pretty sure Copeland doesn't eat bacon and pork because if it. But it hasn't affected him otherwise. Just uses it as a dietary guideline.

I had a friend a few months ago that wanted to stop eating pork. He tried to pretend it was for health reasons but he was coming under a religious lie and even his wife was concerned.
Fortunately he listened to godly advice from different friends and realized he was getting sidetracked into law

My solution .......eat more bacon to break the bondage

Yes he is but man still tries to find acceptance through carnal means to please God

    Philip 3:9 - and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;

God loves the nation of Israel and his desire is to save them. He still has promises that he wants to fulfill. I support the nation of Israel

But the soul of a Jew is not more precious to God than the soul of a pagan idolater. God is not more pleased when a Jewish person accepts Christ than a pagan.
Believers do not get more rewards for leading a Jew to Jesus than leading a pagan to Jesus.
Heaven rejoices EQUALLY over the soul of any human that accepts Jesus

Yes and is the more obvious demeanor that some give off. The husband said he was drawn to Roots because of his wife. I had asked him to give me his story of that journey because I knew his family heritage is attached to an incredibly lukewarm, local church that belongs to the DoC (Disciples Of Christ) a dying, dried up church.

I wonder where a fresh testimony for Jesus is among them. They are locked into a culture rather than a Kingdom.

Haven't they read the writings of perhaps one of the greatest pharisees of his day?

Colossians 2:11-23 New King James Version (NKJV)

11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.

20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations— 21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” 22 which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

They have a dance for each of those scriptures. I taught on Hebrews and showed them their neglecting Heb 8:7-9...

7 ¶ For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second.
8 Because finding fault with them, He says: "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah--
9 "not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the LORD.“

And also, more importantly, Heb 8:13...
13 ¶ In that He says, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.“

Instead, they plop down a stack of teachings this wonderful Rabbi in Florida has blessed them with.

I told them they could find a place to hang out with us but they would miss their wintering days under the Rabbi. When I left that church they had been with us just recently, they havent showed up at our new church plant. Truthfully, they arent missed much and that speaks more of them than us.

I don't know if you remember or not or even heard or read about it, but Reggie White the football player was a Christian. And in his later years before his death he really got into the Jewish thing, started learning Hebrew, etc. Not sure how far or deep it went.

I wonder if this is the pendulum swinging the other way for that well-known pastor saying that the OT wasn't needed...
