Some of the worst legal decisions in history have been made by:

1- trying to solve a rare exception by imposing a law on all of society. For example, the main argument for the 1973, decision in Roe verses Wade, (that legalized abortion on demand), was based on the emotional claim that some women were dying in back alley abortions. Although there was some truth to the claim, the incidents were actually rare. But that decision opened the door to the mass genocide of more then 50 million babies (and counting)! Can you imagine amputating your leg because you have a mole that had a 1 in 1000 chance of becoming cancerous? You might be wise to cut it off if you had a 50% chance of losing your life, (if you didn't amputate the limb),but not when the odds are ridiculously in your favor.

2- by making a victim right simply because they were victimized. For example, someone is bullied because they are a boy who is wearing girls clothes and thinks they are a girl. No one should be abused no matter their situation but being abused doesn't make them right. Yet somehow in our need to show mercy to victims society feels obligated to embrace the person's dysfunction as normal when in fact they are mentally ill. The saddest thing about situations like this is that normalizing mental illness will keep these people from getting the help they need to actually recover.

3- by ignoring facts and elevating feelings. Many laws have been passed because someone made an emotional plea with a compelling story that was actually not true. Feelings are important in life but they are often not rooted in reality. For example, a person with anorexia feels like they are fat but of course, even though their feelings are intense, they are not based on facts. Agreeing with their feelings may resolve the tension in your relationship with them but it will most likely end in their death.
