    I don't understand...

... why people I thought were grounded, mature Christians will live together with someone instead of getting married.

    I just don't understand.

it's become an accepted thing. The whole idea that people wouldn't have sex, regardless of marriage, is laughable for most people now.

People are into a "do it yourself" mentality with relationships. Some people think that sex is virtually the first step, some people think that the relationship should develop a whole lot first until sex becomes "natural" (and every scenario in between). The latter may or may not correlate with the content of a marriage, irrespective of the paperwork. Some move together and write their own contract but technically they aren't married in the legal sense. If you argue then a lot of people will tell you that "people can have sex whenever they want" but "whenever they want" doesn't necessarily mean "straight away". I overheard a discussion a few years ago where a young woman asked another woman if she thought she and her boyfriend ought to have sex now since they had been together for two years. The woman asking was definitely not a Christian. The reply seemed to revolve around an assessment of their relationship.

Hyper grace is part of the problem IN the church....to tell a Christians their choices are wrong/sin is renounced as judging....there truly is a tremendous amount of idolatry within the 'Christian' community. By idolatry I speak of formulating a god in the mind that does not exist...

There's the kind that don't care about their sins or who simply go with the logic of the world. There's also the kind that is more thought through and who reason like some of the American posters here have done, that marriage isn't the government's business so it becomes a DIY thing. There may be paperwork involved, there may not be. Some of them may be fooling themselves even if their intentions seem good but this is also the case sometimes when people are married legally. Especially when they get married without bothering much about searching their intentions since they reason that the paperwork itself is proof that it is legitimate.

....I just don't think most who choose to live together really think that deeply about it at all....they might use that argument but not because they actually believe it...if they did, the question, 'Then why NOT just get the paper?' silences them...

The fear of The Lord is no longer operative in the lives of people, even Christians. Yet from God's point of view, it's still the beginning of wisdom. Those who disregard the fear of The Lord are fools.

Times are changing and there are more and more people that see that as a legitimate alternative to legal marriage, not just as a way of rebelling or simply not caring. Don't assume per default that everyone that call themselves Christians and who do that are simply rebelling. Ask them first and see what they say. "why not just get the paper" might get you the reply "we have a paper, just not the government's version".

In my observations, it's been mostly the man who don't want to marry (I believe it's because they're still looking for something better). Many Christian women are so desperate to hang onto a man no matter the cost, not realizing the cost may be their very souls, or health. 1 Cor. 6:18

They haven't yet learned to abide in Christ, haven't learned that only He can fulfill that deep longing in their spirit. I love Jesus' words in John's Gospel, chapters 15-17.

The Lord spoke to me several years ago when, I believe, He put it on my heart to pray for the whole month of February for single Christians who desired to marry.

He said (paraphrasing), "unless you're content being single for the rest of your life, you're not ready for marriage." Talk about REVELATION.

Reminds me of what Bishop Butler use to say during the Marriage Seminars back in the day..."Love is blind, but marriage is an eye opener!"
When your praise match your prayers, the answer will come.

Another excuse I've heard that's being used by some senior Christians is that they would lose part of or all their Social Security benefits and couldn't survive with less money.

A recent case I heard was about a Christian lady at a friend's Church. This lady would lose her dead husband's widow's benefits, so she chooses not to marry the man she's living with.

My response is, (were I the one she confided in), what happened to trusting the Lord? If the relationship is ordained of God, He will "supply ALL of your needs according to HIs riches in glory by Christ Jesus."
