    Confederate Monuments Removed

Confederate Monuments Removed Or Vandalized Across US

AP) – Confederate monuments are being removed around the country under pressure from those who say they honor a regime that enslaved African-Americans. The pace has increased, however, in the wake of last weekend's deadly confrontation at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

I live in a town that has dozens of confederate-era monuments, and parks and schools named after them, and it has never bothered me at all...

I never felt "offended" by them - I just considered them "historical artifacts"

With so many other pressing issues in this world, a statue of a dead General is the least of my worries.

That's what they want removed next:

After Charlottesville, some rally to take Confederate name off schools

Seems like some people just need something to be mad about, do they even know that General Lee was against slavery?

"Although history knows him mostly as "the Rebel General," Lee was a disbeliever in slavery and secession and was devoutly attached to the republic that his father and kinsmen had helped bring into being."

I guess I'm not a very symbol-oriented person, as I don't respond either positively or negatively to symbols. What I want is real progress on real issues that affect people's lives. My feeling on the statue removal movement is that it arises from a kind of desperation which itself is due to the difficulty to actually make real progess on real issues.

But for the sake of historical accuracy, it might be wise to place a plaque, near the statue, stating a few facts about America's slavery program: number of people brought over from Africa, number of people who died, conditions, etc.

I agree, it should help to make it clear that this isn't an official tribute and that that is only something that goes on inside the heads of the white supremacists and like minded.

I was at the store today and bought a loaf of "White Mountain Bread".

It occurred to me that I should generate a complaint with Publix just for the heck of it. This kind of stuff just doesn't make me feel safe, I mean that's just racist bread!
