Quest,
Unconditional love does not require subjection to abuse.

Mat 12:2 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, “Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!”
3 But He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him:
4 how he entered the house of God and ate the showbread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests?
5 Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless?
6 Yet I say to you that in this place there is One greater than the temple.
7 But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless.
8 For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
Isn't Jesus also Lord of his own sayings ? Isn't he the Word incarnate, from Genesis through Revelation ?

Unconditional love for the Lord implies not placing oneself further from God's love than others. That is being truly selfless.
1 Cor 13:3 though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing
Some call committing sati the ultimate act of selflessness but in the eyes of the Lord it is an abomination.

Well as stated from page one...sigh....because we entered a vowed covenant and God desires us to be a people who KEEP those covenants..
Secondly just like all other areas of our life we are tested to die to the flesh and live as unto Christ for the purpose of Him transforming us into His image..how that turns out is between HIM and us.
Third...AS we submit to HIM and stop being our spouses judge we take ourselves out of the way for HIM to work on them..
How that turns out is between HIM and them.
