Thread: Did you believe in Santa as a child?

How did you find out the truth and how did you feel about it?

I honestly don't remember, so I guess I wasn't traumatized. I was raised in an unchurched family, although Mom would drop us off at Sunday School if we got ourselves up and ready to go. I seem to always have known about the REAL Christmas Story.

Yes. I don't remember how I found out he wasn't real, but I know I suffered no trauma.

When you grow up, you put away childish things. When I played with dolls, I knew they weren't real though I pretended they were.

i was told 2 never go down stairs after midnite cause if santa was there he would spit tobacco juice n2 my eyes.... not kidding.... my dad was "warped" n some ways which by the way explains alot of inconsistencies later n my life....

I stopped believing when I peeked into my parents' room and saw a present marked "from Santa" I briefly "re-believed" when I heard sleigh bells outside my house, but that was just my crazy neighbor running around the house with the bells. I was not traumatized. I recognized it for what it was, a childhood game that I got to be in on then for my younger brother and sister. I went from believing in Santa to feeling "grown up."

I believed in Santa as a child, but was told gently by my mother at my bedside at age nine that there really wasn't a Santa. I remember that, and how I wasn't disappointed but tried to act it!

Does that make me a people pleaser???

Funny thing, though...my mother would still attach Christmas tags to our gifts that said, "From S.C." LOL!

I kinda "outgrew" the Santa thing, nobody had to tell me he wasn't real. (Sorry the pic is so big

I never believed. My parents didn't believe in teaching us to believe in Santa. We all thought it was hilarious to shock adults who thought we would believe! A workman once tried to tease us about Santa not being able to come down our non-existent fireplace and we all laughed at him. I'm the oldest of 4 and was probably no more than 6 or 7 at the time. I never felt I missed out by not believing. On the other hand, my dh did believe. He was very traumatized on learning the truth and felt that his parents had lied to him. Funny thing is, I never lost the magic of Christmas - have always loved it. Dh, on the other hand, doesn't really see any point at all to Christmas, was glad to stop putting up a tree, and would like us to do nothing special for Christmas. Not too hard to see why I don't see any reason to teach children to believe.
