Thread: Did you believe in Santa as a child?

  1. #11
Mr C and I were talking about this earlier. I mentioned on the other santa thread that I grew up in a Christian home. We were raised to be honest and I never once had any thought that my parents were "lying" to me. It never occurred to me that they were lying to us about anything. We had an expectation of honesty. My parents didn't make a big deal out of the santa thing.

At the risk of sounding offensive, santa aside, I would like to say that as an adult there is no way in the world to convince me that the day the world celebrates as Christmas has anything to do with the birth of my Saviour Jesus Christ. Decorations, more stuff than anyone knows what to do with, gotta shop, gotta give gifts, begrudge spending on kin folks we don't even like, gotta send cards........ and on...... and on...... and on......

I fully love celebrating the birth of my Saviour, but not with the way of the world with it's retail clap trap.

Anyone remember Dr. E.V. Hill on tbn many years ago? He was such a precious brother. Once he preached a sermon on the Christmas retail disgrace. He said, "Christmas ain't your birthday!" When your real birthday comes around, by all means celebrate big time if you wish was the crux of the message, but don't do the overdone commercial thing on the day we celebrate the birth of Christ.

That year my mom shared that message with the extended family who always over did the spending way beyond their means. Well, the first family BD came around and and we all gathered round and had a nice celebration. When the next BD came around, mine, most couldn't be bothered. That was the last party.

Yeah, I miss Dr. E.V. Hill! A friend and I would talk about his messages all the time! She used to live in the LA area and I think she visited his church often.

I don't really remember when I found out Santa wasn't real, but it wasn't a big deal for me. Santa never played a huge part in our Christmas.

I did believe in Santa Claus when I was a child.

Why I stopped believing (at around the second grade of elementary school):

    a) My parents could not explain why each store seemed to have its own Santa Claus. (I didn't buy the explanation that they were his "assistants".)

    b) The logistical difficulties of one man delivering packages to a billion homes over a 24 hour period became apparent.

    c) When I started asking for expensive presents, on the grounds that "Santa can afford them", my parents realized that it was time to tell me the truth.

My Mother told me that they had to pay Santa for the gifts, so I couldn't get expensive presents from him.
